Ion Torpedoes - 2 ion tokens?

By Androniq, in X-Wing Rules Questions

The text on Ion Torpedoes card says: "the defender and each ship at Range 1 of it receives 1 ion token". Since a ship is considered to be at Range 1 of itself, and there is no specification that "each OTHER ship at Range 1", does this mean that the defender receives 2 tokens? Or it has to be understood as a set of ships (defender + ships in range), and after that apply the "receives 1 ion token" requirement? (Since a set cannot comprise the same element more than once.)

You're overthinking it.

Just do what the card says. The defender and anything else at R1 (friend or foe) receives a single ion token.

RAW I think you're right, but RAI you're clearly not. Worth dropping a line to the rules questions form to suggest a clarification or erratum.

I believe it is saying "the defender and each ship within R1 of it" just to point out how it is a little bit different from how an Assault Missile would work.

I'd also point out that "defender and each ship" may include the defender twice but it still says to only assign it 1 Ion Token. The target selection is all one big group even if something falls into multiple categories within that group.

So this is basically what I've been saying about sets and elements. Thank you all

Rogue One, that ISD was totally getting extra ion damage from being in range one of itself.

Ion Torps says at range 1 not within range one.

So a ship itself is range zero?

If something is including the ship of origin and everything "at" R1 of that ship it is functionally the same as being within R1. Where "within range X" and "at range X" really start to matter is as you move out and begin creating those donut holes.

The difference between "at" and "between" is where the base is when measuring range.

"At range x" means the when your meauring range only the closest part of the base has to be in that rangeband.

"Within range x" means the entire base of the target has to be in that rangeband.

Also a ship is always considered to be at range one of itself.

I think if they intended the defender to receive two ion tokens it would have been worded differently. Something like, "If this attacks hits, the defender receives 1 ion token. Then, each ship at range 1 of the defender receives 1 ion token." Making it into multiple steps, each time giving 1 ion token to the defender.

But it doesn't say anything like. The fact that the card says, "the defender and each ship at range 1 of it...", is simply giving you a starting point and an ending point to measure range.

It seems likely that the intended use is the defender suffers whatever damage from the shot, and receives 1 ion along with everyone else at range 1 of it, Which really is what the card says. But I do see how you could over analyze and argue semantics on this one in an attempt to give the defender 2 ions.
