CC Spynet token information: secret or public?

By Big Easy, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

When both factions receive a Spynet token during the Strategy phase, at what point (if ever) do players reveal which fleet it was assigned to? I'm imagining a lot of gamesmanship over it which could be interesting.

If it's public, then which faction assigns first? By assigning second, you can give your Spynet token to a fleet that is matched against an enemy fleet with a Spynet token. That guarantees either a) you can have the last move in a spy vs spy maneuver as second player, or b) you can prevent any spy effects from occuring by choosing not to spend your Spynet token during the battle (since first player must use all Spynet tokens before second player).

If it's secret, that fits well thematically and adds tension not knowing if your fleet has been compromised by spies, resulting in careful positioning. And of course if/when the reposition comes it is a bigger reveal.

Thoughts on how this should be played?

All information except the location of Rebel bases is public.

I don't know if there is a "correct way". The rulebook is not very specific on that, it just only says that at the beginning of the Battle Phase, each team gains Spynet tokens according to the locations they control with this bonus and may distribute it in any manner, but doesn't say anything on when this information is revealed.

With my friends we assign secretly the tokens between the team members at the beginning of the battle phase and then reveal it all at the same time, so there can be no speculation knowing what the other team did.

On Page 11 - under A Note on Secrecy it pretty much outlines that "All other information is public knowledge".

I know that, the thing is when each team decides to reveal which player has the Spynet token. If, as public knowledge, one team must say immediately which player has the Spynet token, then I'll wait until the other team tells me which player of theirs have it to decide which fleet of my team will have ours, and that wouldn't have many sense

Yep. I'd say one team would have to announce first.

Because otherwise, what's the Answer? They're not announced, because we sit in a constant loop of "You Announce..." "No, You Announce."

So, Solution, straight up, that's Rules-Friendly:

The Team who has "Campaign Initiative" - ie, the Team that's Declaring the first Assault. Declares First.

I think that works best - especially in light of precedence of the 1st Player having to Declare all of their effects first, when they have the same timing as the Other Player's...

And I have a sneaking suspicion that's already in the Campaign Rulebook, although mine is not at hand to double-check right now.

If it ever becomes an issue in the campaign and the teams can't decide on the correct timing of revealing who has what.....

Well.......

This is some of the beauty of having physical tokens present. Have both teams secretly assign tokens, then line the players up and physically reveal who has what. Stops the whole last second swapping who has a token after the other team has revealed theirs.

Of course I know many of you would prefer to do it the other way round, with one team deciding first and the other then choosing based on this.

"Have Both Teams Secretly Assign Tokens" does seem to fly in the face of "All other information is Public Knowledge." Though, that's kind of the disjoin we have.

Same as "Both teams Simultaniously Assign Tokens" flies in the core Armada concept that there is no Simultanious - if there are things to resolve in the same timing, then there is an ordaned order to it.

Of course, if it doesn't specifically say it, then of course, choose whatever the hell your gaming group is cool with... Which is the CORE Unspoken Rule of the corellian Conflict :D

I think my view is based on the fact that I attempt to interpret rules and rules-centric conditions that respect current rules rather than add new concepts, before going for other solutions...

So I guess at least I have a reason for coming to my decision... As much as it would be interesting to give "because its cool." as an answer... :D
