Squadron based titles? a fresh way to fix some beloved ships

By TheOz, in X-Wing

Fixing in x wing, we want it, and in some cases we have gotten it. The title seems to be the easy way to balance ships. But x7 has proven that they can " over fix" a ship, to where it goes from never used, to almost has to be used because it's so good.

Considering the increasing power levels of ships in x wing, and the continual improvement of combos, fixing is a even more difficult task, especially when it comes to costs and what titles add, you wanna make it good but not too good. Also how do we get generics to see more play then named? There may be a solution

...now what if titles could have effects on a whole squad if it followed certain guideline. This idea was inspired by the latest x wing fix thread and it got me thinking...is this what we need to fix generics...giving squads bonuses for taking several copies of the same ship. Could an x wing fix include a bonus for flying multiple together, and extra mod, damage passing, increased attack and defensive powers, maybe an autothrusters like effect for running together. Maybe y wings can get bonuses for using munitions by flying together. Maybe tie fighters can get an extra edge from a squadron title.

What do you think, what are your creative squadron title effects and do you think this would be an area of design you'd like to see ffg go into?

Maybe instead of non-unique titles, they could put in unique title like Red 5 for attacking with torpedoes and Red 2 for taking damage. Red Leader could act as a synergistic allowing ships with a Red title in range to share titles just like IG-2000 allows to share title abilities.

Red Leader

Your ships in range 1-2 may treat another friendly ship in range 1-2 equipped with Red title as having the same title.

Red 2

After you are dealt a damage card you may perform a free boost or barrel roll action.

Red 5

When making an attack with a <torpedo> weapon you may add 1 die to your attack pool.

Gold Leader

Your ships in range 1-2 may treat another friendly ship in range 1-2 equipped with a gold title as having the equipped <astromech> equipped.

Gold 5

When revealing a straight maneuver you may perform a free target lock action (before the check stress step).

I hope so, though I actually hope it comes as it's own thing, not as a title. I also think there is room for multiple squads per ship. Have Rogue Squadron and Red Squadron, the former perhaps giving some sort of extra reposition while the latter gives bonuses to torpedo use on t-65s.

I even think a few mixed ship squadrons could work, like Blue Squadron having t-65s and U-Wings in them.

Hmm, maybe make Black Squadron for Ties, allowing them to assign the damage that was suppose to be dealt to one tie onto another at close range.

Anyway, Squadron bonuses have a lot of potential, and I really hope we see them in future.

I think it's a really cool idea, I just wish they would make it real already.

I sounded mean

I'm not too interested in talking about specific fixes, but I have a couple of ideas for how FFG might introduce squadron rules.

The simplest would be something like creating a "squadron upgrade slot" just like titles and modifications, which are simply unprinted upgrade slots for all intents and purposes. Just say each ship can take 1 squadron upgrade card, and you're good to go.

If FFG wanted to do something more complex -- like a new game format -- they could adapt the adventuring party cards from Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd edition. Imagine a 5" x 7" card called a "Rebel Command Panel" with appropriate Rebel artwork. On this card is a "mission tracker" (numbered 1 through 10), a space for "reserves," and 1 to 3 slots for "command upgrades." (Scum squadrons might not get as many command upgrade slots as Rebels and Imperials, but this wouldn't necessarily be unbalanced if you read on.)

How this would all work is that you'd slot in command upgrade cards such as "Rogue Squadron, each time one of your Rebel Alliance X-Wings suffers damage from an attack, move the mission tracker up by 1" and "When your mission tracker reaches 4, you may remove any number of stress tokens from your ships. When your mission tracker reaches 8, you may flip one of your ships' faceup Damage cards facedown" and "During setup, you may place any combination of 3 focus and evade tokens in reserve. At the start of the Combat phase, you may place 1 token from your reserves onto a ship that does not already have that token" and "You may place 1 elite pilot talent upgrade costing 1 point in a command upgrade slot. At the start of the Activation phase, you may equip that card to one of your ships." Command upgrades could be set up to be Rebel-only or Imperial-only, or to only trigger when X-Wings or TIE Fighters do things, or what have you. The idea is that you can customize your squadron's benefits in lots of ways.

How to pay for this stuff (in points) is the big question for me. I think you'd want to create a new format where each squad has the usual 100 points, plus a budget of 10 points for command upgrades or something like that.

About this subject, one fan made Title found here changed our way to fly X wings.

As a way to help T 65 we gave them 2 free points to buy upgrades. Later 3.

And the "Rogue Squadron" Title hit us. No more free pts... This title changed it all

ROGUE SQUADRON. Free. Only T 65. At the start of the combat phase if you are within range 3 of another squadron mate, receive one Evade token.

And this was amazing. Playing Epic or Double Epic you see that group of 6 Rogues... And not cannon fodder. Squadron Titles are one of the more simple and way to add spice and theme. But beware... Not suitable for 100 pts game. You need at least 200 pts for this to work.

This is definitely an area the game needs to explore. Attaining Mindlink and IG2000 are already effectively squadron titles, so there's room for more of that sort of thing in the game.

Title is good but since we have condition card why not create a squadron card you paid costly but give ability to all your ship ?

Example :

Rogue Squadron (Rebel) (5 pts ?) Small ship only : All ship must be PS 4 or more : When attacking, if you have locked a ship you may change two focus results into critical.

Obsidian Squadron (Empire) (5 pts ?) Small ship only : All ship must be PS 3 or more : When you overlap a obstacle, you may reroll your dice.

What do you think ?

Well what I like about the title thing is that it allows for multiple ways to assemble the squads, mane one title is for an all x wing squad, maybe one is for the unique or able to synergize with ships that don't share the title

Really I think it's a smart way to make low ps generics more of a thing. You can make it pretty powerful but have range restricted so it takes formation flying. Maybe if your in range one of another ship with the same title, you get another action and roll one additional die, something to make it desirable to fit in as many generics as you can

Or maybe extra bonuses can happen the more copies of the title are in play

I also like the idea of taking Omega Leader with Omega Squadron Pilots.

Omega Squadron - x Pts

Omega Squadron TIE only

If two ships with the Omega Squadron Title both have a target lock on the same ship, that ship may not modify its dice when defending against one of those ship's attacks this round.

Probably not balanced, but the specifics aren't important, I just mean something so that if I fly that entire squadron that they thematically already gave the same name to, then they kind of start to act like their leader, or at least synergize with them (maybe their TLs can count as OLs so he can spend his etc).
