Darth + Gunner

By iamzoner, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Player with Darth Vader and Gunner rolls an attack that misses. Player triggers Darth's ability to suffer damage and apply a crit damage. Since Crit damage is not a result of an attack that hits, Player then triggers gunner, rolls a new attack, and regardless of whether then new attack hits, player then triggers Darth a second time?

Is this sequence legit?

Yes.

Note, that you CAN'T trigger Vader on the second attack if the first use of Vader kills you, even though you CAN still use gunner at that point. I forget the exact reason why, but you can use Vader even if it kills you, but not if you already have so many dmg cards that you are already going to be destroyed.

You can use Vader as long as you have hull to lose is why, so if you destroy yourself the first shot, you can't Vader the second shot

Despite the fact that you never loose hull, only accumulate cards.

Boy has that screwup in the FAQ always bugged me.

You know what I meant

He knows what you meant but as Forgottenlore points out that is NOT how the rules actually read. As written the FAQ on the ability is worthless even if its intent is relatively clear.

Well if you have even one hull left, you could use Vader to kill yourself, correct?

Yes?

I think you mean to say "if it takes one more damage card to destroy you" instead of "one hull left" because there are no ships with one hull. Vader can deal enough damage to the ship he is on to kill it BUT he has to be using his ability on another ship.

You can Vader yourself to death, but not beyond. If you have one fewer damage card than your hull rating, you can Vader, but not if you have damage cards >= your hull.

"But that's not what the FAQ says!" ;)
