Expansion Predictions: 2017 edition

By FatherTurin, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

It'd be nice to get some of the other members of the Rebels crew, more of their villains, and even a few generics. I wouldn't mind some FA or CW minis either, generic and heroes. As far as big expansions, bring on the Ewoks and Endor, but could we also see Noghri figures to accompany Thrawn? Really, a stand alone (yet compatible) game called Republic Assault would be great for CW era stuff.

Will there be no news on this holy day? : /

Unlikely. Thursdays usually just see articles on what's new in stores.

Well you could in the same sense you can put a bow on a baby boy and call it a girl. If you look closely enough you can tell the difference, but from a table top stand point they certainly could be death troopers.

The helmets are completely different for starters, and the list goes on, but for the purpose of table top play there would be no reason you can't pull it off.

Kinda like how I painted up 10 TIE fighter pilots to look like AT-AT crew and had them led by general Veers, to make a squad of poorly armed snowtroopers. The TIE pilots do have a bunch of little differences from the AT-AT crew helmets and stuff but its fine for minis. Hence, deathtroopers might be seen as a waste of a sculpt.

Dunno how much it actually matters behind the scenes, but IA is the most sculpting-conservative line of "dice & paper" Star Wars minis yet. Which leads me to believe that something that visually similar will not be sculpted. I can't tell if it's through necessity or design that they do only one pose of a given trooper, creature, etc. If through necessity, then I doubt death troopers will be added until other things have been checked off.

Is there anything special about the black stormtrooper costumes from R1 other than blackness? Can't you just paint regular stormtroopers black and call them your elites?

I did a Shadowtrooper set for each type of trooper (excluding Snowtroopers) Storm, Heavy, Jet Pack. I even created Custom Cards for them as well.

If you like you can save this image, open it with Microsoft Paint and scale it to 70 percent and print it in Card Stock. Fold it over and use either a glue stick or "Modge Podge" to adhere both sides together. It is the same size and looks as if it belongs in the game.

Having HotE be so out of left field, I feel like this thread is going to be a lot more difficult now.

Yep. An unexpected setting and doing two big boxes in a row messed up all our calculations! Guess it's true:

Predicting expansions ain't like dusting crops, kid!

I still think we can predict an Endor box.. I just don't know if we can predict WHEN lol.

One thing we've seen common across the board is that they like to use Canon material in the boxes, so big names like the bounty hunters, Jabba, now the Emperor. So they are kind of running out of big name villains.. but now with Maul and Ahsoka in the actual expansion instead of just blister packs.. that just opens things up in a multitude of directions. But at the same time, are there that many well known canon villains left to carry their own box? Is Tarkin going to be the big villain for Endor?

Say that again, buy slowly... :P

I'd guess Thrawn will be a more likely villain. He's a little more vicious with hand-to-hand.

I thought these looked a little underpowered until I saw the double black dice. Then I thought maybe OP? Thought to tell. Have you played with them?

Yeah, isn't this just an Elite Snowtrooper with an extra black die?

It's sort of a mash up of a couple troopers, which I think is fine in a way since the troopers are already pretty similar. I think that the surge for "focus, weaken" would be more thematic if it were surge for "focus, hide". If the double black was too much you could just give them an inherent +1 block or similar. Sorry for the critiques, I've liked what you've done. I'm just trying to be constructive:)

Edit: You could also use a black and a white, with a feature that negates the X-man.

I appreciate the feedback and understand the scrutiny. This was the very first card I customized and it was more of a "How good will the finished product look?"

The whole thought behind this was to break up the monotony of all white troopers (I have painted almost 2 complete sets of all expansions).

It was based on the Shadowtrooper from EA's Star Wars Battlefront. If you have ever played a survival mission these guys are among the toughest to kill. (They cloak, They do 75% health damage in one shot and the seem to have an incredible amount of armor).

I realize that I probably should've removed a defense dice and thrown in a hidden attribute but I haven't revisited this character.

I have created over 20 Original Trilogy cards of characters that my fiance, myself and others who play would like to see in the game and we have tried to tweak them as needed. (Yoda, Admiral Ackbar, Nien Nunb, Lobot, BibFortuna, Grand Moff Tarkin, 4-LOM, Zuckuss, Wedge Antilles, Boushh, Garindan, RA-7 Droid to name a few).

Most of my other cards are posted in the "Imperial Assault Custom Cards" thread under "Painting and Modification"

That's cool. My main look in Battlefront is a Shadowtrooper. My call sign is: CPOCaseyRiback1 if you're ever online and on the same server. Cloaking would be cool in the multiplayer mode.

Back to IA: I just painted my stormtrooper villain pack as shadowtroopers. I couldn't resist once I started playing BG with the Imperial Black Ops deck. They were just too perfect for this campaign.

I know this is off topic but here is my shadow squad including elite Emperor's Royal Guard. Really thought long and hard about doing a squad of Snowtroopers but I figured they would've really stuck out in the "snow" and wouldn't have gotten more than a few steps before getting sniped on Hoth! call sign: C3P0FETT 1433l9c.jpg

I am looking forward to this new expansion. Very surprised they kind of reverted back in the time line as far as setting. Who is to say that events didn't happen on Coruscant after the Battle of Endor. Although looking at the 3 Villain/Ally packs and the tile pieces that show the Jedi Counsel Room before "Order 66" they seem to be moving into the Pre Original Trilogy timeline.

Hopefully this time line brings Yoda into the game. I would love to see Plo Koon or a Kel Dor hero. Kit Fisto or a Nautolan hero. Saesee Tiin or an Iktotchi hero. (we are getting the Cerean female Ko-Tun instead of Ki-Adi Mundi.)

Although going in this direction it really makes me wonder the relevance of the new Ally/Villain/Merc packs just released. What Expanded Universe time line do they fit into? I understand the Jawa is indigenous to Tatooine, but where do Hera and Chopper fit in? The Droids are now canon from a comic book series? I always thought Emperor Palpatine should've been released long ago in place of the Grand Inquisitor. I understand their choice for The Grand Inquisitor as a Villain Pack needing or wanting a second Lightsaber wielding Force user. Emperor Palpatine never drew his Lightsaber in the OT and there aren't really a whole lot of main character villains in the Original Trilogy universe.

I was hoping for an Endor box because I would have loved a side mission called "EWOOOOOOOOOKKKSSS!!!" (imagine Kirk yelling "Khan!") When Emperor Palpatine realizes Luke was right and his over confidence and has led to his down fall.

How funny would that have been if in the scene where Emperor Palpatine is using Force Lightning on Luke, Palpatine freezes just for a moment, staring ahead blankly he gasps, and quietly mumbles "Ewoks!". The Emperor then becomes frantic and says "Hey Vader finish this will you, I just remembered I left something on my shuttlecraft!" and he proceeds to escape the Second Death Star.

Look pretty cool! Love to see alternative paint jobs like this.

edit:

I know I said predictions would be hard, but one thing seems easier now- Figure packs. Much like Wave 7's Pre-A New Hope figure pack release, HotE seems to also have a theme: Non-Jedi Force Users.

So, I think it's not implausible for us to see figure packs with themes, both in and out of boxed waves.

One theme I think would fit in well with the direction the game is going is a "Relics of the Clone Wars" one (though that sort of applies to HotE, but whatever).

Rebel- Rex

Merc- Hondo or Cad Bane

Imperial- original Kaminoan clones?

Ok, for non-Jedi force users... being who I am... I want a Revwien!

In a future Endorexpansion, a Reek-Mini would be nice, eventually with a ewokrider. I think the reeks would fit to endor and we need more monster.minis. : )

There are two types that I've been wanting more of lately- vehicles and creatures.

Now that we're finally getting another proper vehicle (Jet Troopers was a bit of a copout) in the AT-DP, I'd like to see a new creature in the next big expansion. So yeah, Chrisael, I think a Reek would be great. I'd really like a Acklay, but I don't know how that figure could be realistically added to the game. Maybe if the mini is up on its back haunches with its front legs in the air in front of it, in a 2x3 base like the rancor.

Reek should be "awkward" not able to attack unless it moved that same turn.
Acklay could get an auto pierce 3.

That's a good idea, but we'd probably need a different keyword since "awkward" is already something else.

An Acklay would be great to but I think its fit not so good to endor. But thats only my opinion.

Also be nice would be a datomir-witch riding on a rancor.

Sure, assuming Endor is next. I really don't think that's a given, though.
