Fully Operational - Engineer Source book Announced

By Dr Lucky, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

I'm a bit surprised Wookiees have not shown up in an AoR source. Of course, we haven't seen the Lasat from Rebels at all yet.

Wookiee would fit well in Engineer, a Saboteur, Mechanic or Shipwright all match well. They also have a lot of connection to the Rebels... I wonder if this will be a 4 species book with Ewoks too?

Edit: I could see a Signature Ability that replicates the Ewok log trap in RotJ. A "build big things to stop enemies" ability.

Still hoping we see Givin since I doubt they'd make it into the Spy book aka Operation Downfall . I wouldn't expect to see both Twi'lek and Wookies though. Maybe one or the other. But not both.

I can't help but wish they would have announced a region book instead. I guess it's nice they're getting the crunchy material out first, so they can direct the writers towards region books (which I image are the hardest books to make).

I just hope they haven't dropped region books due to lack of sales or a need to finish the line off quickly.

There you have it, Twillec, Wookies and Lassat as new species for the book. :D

edit: Even when I don't get why anyone would one an extinct species in his AoR book ;-)

I'm going to love this. I just hope the custom starship rules don't limit you to Sil 4 or below ships because large Sil 5 and mall to midsized Sil 6 is my favorite ship size in Star Wars. And yes I know that would take major support to build but I can think of ways for parties from any of the product lines to do so and honestly I think AOR would be the easiest basic theme to justify such an action with.

There's actually great potential for using Sil 5+ ships for trade (including smuggling) and exploration, especially if those ships are largely automated to have small crew requirements.

Sure, if I think about Engineers the first species to come to mind are Ewoks! ;)

I find that Kashyyy´k line in there highly suspicious, and as the Wookiees have a reputation of being crafty engineers, I guess we'll see them for AoR in this book.

I am wondering what the other two specs could be though. My guess is that we get a kind of "MacGyver" kind of Engineer spec, a guy who can create stuff from scratch, like the tree traps some of you mentioned. Basically like a wilderness engineer, perfectly suited for Wookiees.

As far as considering a return spec from Special Modifications, I am highly dubious. Droid Tech is basically the only one I can think of, as we already have the Rigger as stand-in for the Modder. And the Cyber Tech is not really in the vibe of an engineer in AoR.

Someone said "only one speciality" and I wonder why. We were only given one specialisation NAME, but paragraphs 4 and 5 (to me, at least) clearly indicate that we'll also get a "combat engineer" (or "sapper", "frontline mechanic", or whatever else they'll be calling it) and some sort of "civil engineer" (or "technical analyst" or "disaster relief specialist").

And as far as species are concerned, the Bith on the cover does not necessarily mean we'll get him, though that would be nice (Forged in battle has a human on the cover after all). Both Wookiee and Twi'lek would be fine too, but I concur that both would be unlikely. Another reprint could be the Nautolan we see welding the speeder. And and of course I would still like to get Sluissi - which are a VERY engineery species - or Vratix, but I don't think I will (ever :( ).

The Verpine (who recently returned fullfledged into canon) were the perfect species for this, but we got them in Strongholds of Resistance already.

I would welcome less popular but thematically appropriate species like the Kaminoans. Lots of other species would have fit the Technician book better than the Engineer book, so I'm not even remotely likely to be correct on my guesses. If they decide to go with oddballs, we could even get something like Gamorreans in this one...

?

Kaminoans is a good one though, with Wookiee that's decent, then they can throw their oddball choice in too.

Sluissi are cool. We had one as the teams engineer in D6.

Omwati... I know I ain't gonna get it but that's what should be in the engineering book, Wookies, omwati and ewok.

Specs would be shipwright, improvised builder, and a computer based spec, like a cross between slicer and droid tech, with a few new crafting rules for computer virus creating, and a few additional droid programming rules as well as all new ship crafting rules.

On the contrary, they've never used a species on the cover that isn't playable in the game. When Special Modifications was announced, they didn't mention the species, but the cover features a Besalisk, and it added Besalisk. So, past patterns and all evidence so far indicates that, yes, the Bith will be playable.

Yeah but building a il 5 or 6 ship would require an organization to support you. An Edge or Force and Destiny party certainly could be part of or ally with such an organization but most AOR parties already have an organization with the necessary resources backing them.

If they did 4 species like they sometimes do now I could see both Twi'lek and Wookie Though I still think Twi'lek would be better placed in the up coming Spy book On Her Majesty's Alliance Intel

Why? If you can scratch-build/kit-build a starfighter or light freighter in a rented hangar, you can do the same for a larger ship with a larger hangar (and likely more time). Realistically all of these would require far more resources than a small group would typically possess, so why bother with realism here?

I suppose EotE will give us some clues into what's next since they're now done with the splats.

The big thing is labor and space, which you mentioned plus crew to fully man the ship when it is ready to fly.

It's just a matter of credits and Rarity. Hire workers and crew or buy droids to do the job. Neither requires you to be a part of something bigger so long as you have the credits and can make the Negotiation check (or Streetwise check for less legal operations). A private venture on a ship with a few dozen crew shouldn't be all that odd in Star Wars.

As for space, once again, it's only a matter of credits to rent a larger space for a longer time. Sure, the Rarity on it might be higher than for a small hangar, but PCs tend to have the skills to find what they are looking for and (eventually) the money to obtain it.

I'd personally like to see Bith, Givin, and Skakoan.

I ran some numbers when working on my Vehicle Operations supplements using basic pay for ship crew from other sources. Comparing what consumables cost to replenish (input from various sources) versus monthly crew costs, it's the crew that is the big expense for capital ships. Unless you have a very, very large party of PCs that are willing to work for free, running a larger crewed ship is going to be very expensive.
