Happy Friday, Idea from Shuttle Ty Podcast today!!!

By Cubanboy, in X-Wing

Happy Friday good friends. I was listening to the Shuttle Tydirium podcast and it got me thinking about the state of X-wing. "Go here if you have not https://shuttletydirium.podbean.com/ " if FFG tomorrow said they were putting out a campaign like Corellian Conflict for official play would that breathe life into the game that is not currently there/be a solid x-wing fix?

To Clarify standard and tournament play would be mission focused, the players would come to an agreement "whoever has the lowest bid would pick" and off you go. There is more then enough great ideas out there for a mission pack of 10-20 different types, you force people out of the I have to use this ship or win because I have this upgrade and a box very easily could include any card fixes or new cardboard. I am sure there is 1000 things I am not thinking about but it would be a really great idea for a "2.0" version of x-wing, without asking the player base to buy new ships.

I really believe there could be a great happy medium for everyone and does not have to cost a ton.

Great weekend to all you peeps.

Happy Friday.

I am 100% behind new and interesting ways to play X-Wing, but in the meanwhile, between casual matches, campaigns and Epic play, my dance card is pretty full anyway. I would absolutely buy the hell out of a Corellian Conflict style box for X-Wing, though.

Everyone keeps offering suggestions on how to "save" the game when it's...not dying. Sure, some ships need help and everything isn't perfectly balanced, but the game is still wildly successful and isn't showing any signs of slowing down. If anything, we just need to get past may so people that are burned out on the super long competitive season can relax some

The game doesn't need saved, the players do. As you yourself pointed out, the tournament scene is burning people out and for some, they may actually be giving up the game. The game doesn't need to be saved, it needs to be made more interesting, diverse, and fun, so that burnout is not part of the equation.

I think part of the reason why some people are burned out of the competitive scene is the weird schedule this year. We went straight from worlds to more regionals so there wasn't even a break!
The state of the game is pretty good right now!

I'm a little biased on the answer, but I'll say yes.

I did get to play an awesome mission last night that I made just for the Tie Punisher!

Hey, does the Punisher shine any in that the scenario run? I'm sitting on mine and I've nearly sold it a couple of times due to how poorly it fairs in a dogfight. Of course, the Punisher was never meant to be a dogfighter.

I'm of the opinion the game is in a good state. Product is coming steadily, people are still joining in, the game is still played in the local shops. When it entirely moves to basements only is when you need to start worrying about long term health. No slight to you, Joe. Some games last forever in basements, but they don't grow since they are no longer seen by new people walking into the store.

Definitely! First off, there is at least one guy who loves using it locally. He doesn't go to tournaments, but he's beaten a number of folks with a Tie Punisher in his list.

Next, it's great for what it does. It's a heavy bomber that needs to survive some hits. It is fantastic in the mission we played. Check out the Punish Them! thread. They are loaded to the gills with as much as they can carry. They are pretty brutal. We are also play testing some missions for the GenCon event and I keep thinking that a Punisher would be better than a Tie Bomber in a few missions. Also, Sensor Jammer helps.

Tis a good friday.

Got my Nintendo Switch. Just gotta wait for work to be over....ughh..

As for an xwing campaign, i imagine they will come out with one eventually. It would probably be a lot more in depth than the Armada one since the basic design of that game kinda leads into such a thing. Xwing doesnt without some heavy thinking.

The Corellian Conflict was great for getting people excited and enthusiastic for regular, non-tourney games of Armada.

However, once people started playing the campaign, a lot of groups found it wasn't very well-balanced and that once a team got a lead it was pretty hard for the other team to fight back, so you have several drawn out rounds of a forgone conclusion. The strategic benefits were hardly balanced (Diplomats and Spacers were next to useless) and the base defense missions were heavily lopsided toward Ion Cannon, such that no one can really kill a base unless you have a huge points advantage. My group played the campaign for several weeks, until it was a 9-2 and called. Most other local and online groups I talked to also failed to finish their campaign. A campaign is something that is incredibly difficult to design, playtest, and balance, so I wouldn't exactly trust FFG to get it right for X-Wing (since X-Wing struggles with balance so much compared to Armada, for instance).

Also, though, the scale of X-Wing doesn't really lend itself to a good linear campaign (unless players are constantly changing squads).

I disagree that X-Wing won't work in a linear campaign. Small skirmishes can mean a lot in a grand campaign, so the scale isn't really the issue. Ok, trying to control multiple star systems would be silly on an X-Wing scale, I'll give you that, but a single planet is about right. I'm sorry to hear the Corellian Campaign is doing poorly though, that makes it less likely FFG will try again. Balancing a campaign is VERY difficult to do, more so than individual missions... which have not been FFG's strong point in X-Wing.

Yup, Yup, Yup I want this game to last for a long time and not implode. Maybe we are not at the point where something big needs to happen, but I hope that before we get to that point FFG sees the needs and address it.

I think it can be done, and HotAC is a nice example of that. It might be tough to make something like HotAC work as a well-balanced competitive sort of thing, but something like that is a nice model for a fighter squad sized campaign. It'd have to be designed such that it would work as Reb vs Imp, Imp vs Scum, or Reb vs Scum thematically, which may limit some of the theme that could be put into it. Or else, allow one player on each side to play Scum as the hired help or something.

I just think if players are always flying the same squad, it'd get stale really fast. How many times can Wedge and Manaroo face off in dogfights before it starts to feel a little cheesy that neither has been killed yet? That, or allow players to keep building relatively new squads each round from some set pool of options, perhaps. But like, if Parattani is the best list I can build, I'll just fly it every round until it gets destroyed. Why would I fly something less than optimal unless I had to?

Yeah, something would have to be done within the rules to ensure squads shift. I fully agree the same squad every round would be dull. Get enough of that already.
