Specifically though I wonder about this part...

“There are threats lurking in the Unknown Regions, threats that will someday find your Empire. I am familiar with many of them.”

“I will learn of them soon enough on my own,” the Emperor countered placidly. “Can you offer anything more?”

“Perhaps you will learn of them in time to defeat them,” Thrawn said. “Perhaps you will not.

Seems to indicate Vong is still canon could always be rewritten to be something else though.

My take away is, that this allows Thrawn to be still alive during the OT!

I don't see the phrase "Yuuzhan Vong" anywhere. It is a faulty conclusion to read "unknown regions" as "yuuzhan vong are back".

I admit it could be rewritten as a different threat, but in old canon the threat in the unknown regions was the Yuuzhan Vong

Could have been Snoke, for example. We don't know anything about him, and the First Order hung out in the unknown regions, if I understand things correctly.

Could be the Rakata are still around.

In the old canon there were a LOT of threats in the unknown regions.

Did anyone think this wouldn't be the case?

Won't be the First Order.. that's a spin off of Empire wannabes post fall of the Empire. It's noted in Bloodlines...

Could be a lot of things. It's possible it could be the dreaded Vong. Won't believe it till it happens though.

Well, no, but a canon confirmation is still quite big in my opinion

Also, given that this book takes place before ANH, I'm not sure how it would give nay knid of confirmation of Thrawn making it to the OT :P. And it at least starts before Rebels even, though I dunno if the course of the book will take it past those events or not.

Ah, I had no idea about this. I preordered as soon as possible and haven't read anything about the book apart from excited fans

Personally I'm looking forward to any explanation as to where Thrawn was during the battle of Endor (and Scarif, Yavin, or Hoth). It's not important, but I'm very curious

What other threats were out there that Thrawn would believe could take down the empire?

I was trying to imply that he co-opted them. Of course the real answer is that it could be anything. It may not even have been decided by the story group what Thrawn is referring to.

So did anyone read it? Without spoilering too much: why did Thrawn know?!

Ah... Didn't catch that implication. I do doubt that the story group hasn't decided what the threat is, though... From experience, you write yourself into a corner pretty darn fast that way. They'll have notes tucked away defining things. These details can and will change over time, but there's something tucked away, be sure of that.

Do you mean what did he know? The why is immediately apparent: he's a Chiss. Csilla, their homeworld, is in the Unknown Regions.

Who says Snoke was always with the First Order? The Emperor was a Sith long before he got involved in politics. Snoke could be an ancient evil that simply sees the First Order as a means to an end.

Something new they've made up?

I mean about Vader

Oh. Nothing in there.

Outbound Flight. Zahn must be trying to bring that book's events back into canon.

The Emperor had already foreseen this and has begun construction on the J.J. Cannon, a weapon so powerful it can alter the events in all of Star Wars.

The Vong weren't a threat that lay dormant in the unknown regions. They were a hammer that swung directly towards the core as soon as they arrived at the galaxy.

Actually if you read the NJO I'm pretty sure there were scouts that showed up before the main invasion.

I stayed away from the Snoke mention for that very reason. I said it won't be the First Order. Quite specific!

Hopefully it's an indication of 'Vong done right', with aliens that are awesome and story lines that don't suck.
