I like my gripmats. I have three. My experiences with the company were much better than what was previously posted.
I ordered one mat online. It came as promised. I found another at retail, but when that one turned out to be a less grippy kickstarter version, BFR games gave me a deal on a scratch and dent mark 2.
For me the only downside to the gripmat is that it doesn't train you properly for playing on FFG ice rinks at tournaments.

God, ain't that the truth. I try to be careful, I really do, but I'm a big dude with big hands, and I bump ships. On the GripMat, no problem. On mousepad mats, like FFG's, it's a Slip-n-Slide.
I've really liked my 3 FAT mats, no complaints. FFG mats (own 3 of those too) are good, but a little slick (punishes us bumpers), GF9 mats are very economic, but will scratch easy/often, so you can't let that bother you.
Gripmat for me. Anything other than a basic star field is too busy, too distracting for me.
The new Steele open mat. Or last years Steele open mat. Toss up.
After winning a store tournament a few months ago, I had my pick of any of the playmats for an award. It came down to Hoth or Bespin and I chose the Hoth scenery and I absolutely love it.
However, prior to having an official playmat, I use to play on these rubber mats that I found at work. I work in a paper mill and one day I found a 5-foot tall stack of these mats that they use to protect the reels of paper as they load then on the train cars. I immediately knew I could use them for X-Wing.
The only thing I had to do was cut them down to size, which isn't difficult with a utility knife and a straight edge and they're really not any heavier or thicker than an FFG mat. They roll up nicely into a tube and the rubber flecks in the mat look like stars a bit.
Even better, they are extremely slip-resistant. You can almost hold the mat at a 45° angle to the table top and the ships stay put.

Mmm.paper mill.......Packer sign....
Hmmm...
Hello fellow Wisconsin-onian-ite.
Bought one (mousepad material, as FFG does, http://www.deepcutstudio.com/product/wargames-terrain-mat-planets/) at DeepCutStudio and wasn't disappointed. Great quality, good choices, and they have 6x3, 4x4, 6x4...

Bad mat
I really like the FFG mats because they're thinner than the HC&D supplies mat. I'm going to pick up my Starkiller Base Mat this week. So pumped!
EDIT: The middle mat is from HC&D supplies, and can be found here, among other places.
I played on this ****er at regionals and it nearly cost me a game. I didn't want to get tractor beamed onto a rock, so I dialed in a different maneuver than I wanted because no rocks where in the area. After completing my move I noticed the mustache rock was right ****ing beside me! So, yeah, I got tractor beamed right on it.
I recently got the Hoth mat and I love it. Decent grip, and it looks gorgeous. Thought the perspective would be weird but it's actually quite cool than just a boring looking planet ![]()

Awful! I had a similar experience. At Store Championships my shuttle had a focus token which, if I had remembered, would have killed Zuckuss and drastically changed the tied of battle. But alas, I looked and saw no token, so I assumed I had forgotten to take an action. Didn't find it on the mat until the following activation phase and I was LIVID!
I like the original or bespin. None of these weird visibility issues.
I bought one of these before the official one was announced, and I was the envy of every player at the shop:
Black yoga mat.
