Clone Wars already in hand

But the Clone Wars cartoon does picture the separatists as evil, with the typical bad guy grins and all.

That was mostly just Dooku and Palaptines other military cronies.

The few times we saw regular separatist senators they were just regular people who didn't like where the Republic was headed and wanted out.

I think the Separatists weren't outright evil, as the empire, but were being manipulated by Sidious to oppose the Republic. It's complicated.

From Wookieepedia:

The Confederacy was formed by thousands of secessionist star systems on the grounds of excessive taxation and corruption within the Galactic Senate . The secessionist movement that began in 24 BBY would lead to a political crisis in which tensions escalated between the newly-formed alliance and the reigning Galactic Republic . In 22 BBY , the Separatists and the Republic went to war using their respective military forces—the Separatist Droid Army and the Republic clone army —resulting in a pan-galactic conflict for the first time in a millennium .

The following three years would see the Clone Wars wage across the galaxy with the Separatists rapidly attempting to bring the Republic to its knees. Unknown to the majority of the galaxy, however, the war was merely a ploy— Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine , the leader of the Republic, was a Sith Lord called Darth Sidious, to whom Head of State Count Dooku answered. Towards the end of the conflict, the Confederacy suffered several major defeats in the Outer Rim Sieges as the end of the war approached. After Dooku's death , the Separatist Council was executed on Mustafar . With the subsequent shutdown of the droid army , the organization rapidly collapsed as the war came to an end. Following the end of hostilities, trade groups that had supported the cause were nationalized, and most of its remaining star systems rejoined the Republic successor state; the Galactic Empire , whether voluntarily or under threat.

Of course for a game like X-wing, all that nuance gets pared down to White Hats, Black Hats ad Grey Hats.

I'd love to have another era & ships to play with. Maybe in the future!

I've always been puzzled by the 'There are heroes on both sides' remark in the opening crawl of RotS. Maybe there are no good and bad guys in the clone wars. 'This war represents a failure to listen,' Padme says at one point. It suggests that they could have avoided war and come to a fair agreement.

I think the old Clone Wars comics did a much better job of showcasing the non-mustache twirling side of the Separatists. There were plenty of systems, especially those farther from the galactic core, that were tired of the Republic telling them what to do and how to live, but not really offering them any support or aid.

Jabiim is a pretty good example of a planet just being constantly screwed over.

edit: double post somehow

The Clone Wars was the ultimate proxy war. The entire conflict engineered by the Sith, for the Sith.

There were evil people in the Separatist leadership. There were also good people unaware of their Confederacy's crimes, or at least the full extent.

There was a vein of evil and corruption in the Republic, and Palp mined it like the 1849 California gold rush.

To bring Clone Wars into the game there would have to be new factions, because the factions are entirely distinct from the OT era. Subfactions worked for the new TFA era because the Resistance amd First Order are functionally the same as the Rebellion and Empire.

I'd love for there to be three new factions... make the droids (Separatists) more disposable (every table top game needs its genestealer swarms) and the Clones (those who stay with Palp) and last the Jedi/Naboo... then just toss out crossover pilots in some later "just print money" expansion
