X-wing newb

By BadMotivator, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello, just started up X-wing. I've gotten a total of 3 games under my belt. 2 losses and 1 win(murdered the hell out of Po and Rey in the Falcon, Rey sucks at flying apparently)., and been loving it so far. All in on Empire!

Now that I've gotten a little more experience here is a list using the stuff I own(I have a base core set, Imperial Veterans, a TIE defender, and a Tie Interceptor. So 2 basic TIEs, 2 Defenders(one red), a Tie bomber, and an Interceptor)

TIE Defender- Countess Ryad: TIE/D, Outmaneuver, Ion cannon- 40 points

TIE Bomber- Tomax Bren: Long Range Scanners, Proton Torpedoes, Proximity Mines- 31 points

TIE Interceptor- Soontir Fel: Elusiveness- 29 points

I've used Countess Ryad in all of my games so far and loving her. Being able to always turn around is pretty sweet. And pretty much always having an evade token is nice. Ion Cannon+TIE/D+Ion Cannon seems like a sweet combo with her ability to hang a U turn. I do like the TIEx7 upgrade, but this seems like a nice focused package

Used Soontir Fel once and he did good. I borrowed a card I didn't own that I was told synergized with him better than what I had. I forget what it was called, free boost and suffer a stress, then get a free focus from his ability. But till I get the Imperial Aces pack I'll just use what I got. Elusiveness seems good, especially for the fragile Interceptor and if anybody wants stress its Soontir.

Haven't used my bomber yet so not sure what is best for a bomber. but long range scanners and proton torpedoes seems like a good combo. Proximity mine for area denial.

Also, any advice on future purchases would be cool. I've been told I should get a TIE Phantom and I've seen them in action.

I'm also trading my one X-wing for 2 FO TIEs from the second starter pack and all their cards so I will have 2 FO TIEs soon. And I have ordered the Imperial Aces box.

I also have 1 rules question. I was told that if a ship has multiple tokens, say a Focus and an Evade token, that it cannot spend both vs the same attack. But nothing in the rulebook says this, infact it seems to imply the opposite. That you can spend both a focus and evade token vs the same attack. Is this in an FAQ or Errata somewhere or was my opponent mistaken?

Your opponent was mistaken, you can spend multiple tokens on one attack. I would recommend getting Imperial Aces for Push the Limit, a Starviper for a couple copies of Autothrusters would also be helpful if you enjoy playing Soontir. I might also recommend getting the TIE/FO pack for a copy of Juke. As for your squad, Tomax should definitely have Crackshot equipped. There are a number of better mods you could use on him instead of LRS but they all come in packs you might not want (Guidance Chips is in Punishing One and Inquisitor). Ryad is pretty good with Push the Limit (from Imp Aces), TIE/x7, and Twin Ion Engine mk. 2 (TIE Punisher). Soontir is great with Stealth Device (Slave 1 and M3-A), Autothrusters, Push the Limit, Royal Guard TIE (Imp Aces).

Thanks a lot. I have actually ordered the Aces pack for Push the Limit, plus 2 more Interceptors.

What does Juke do? I've heard its good, but I don't know what it does.

Crackshot does seem good for Tomax. What would I drop/shuffle around to get the point from the stuff I have? Drop the Proximity Mine for Crackshot and Munitions Failsafe?

Something like this?

Tomax Bren: Munitions Failsafe, Crackshot, Long Range Scanners, Proton Torpedoes- 30 points

Gives me a point to put somewhere else. Turn Elusiveness into Daredevil on Soontir? Or stay a point down to gain initiative?

the typical Soontir build is Soontir + Push the Limit (Imp Aces, A-Wing) + Royal Guard TIE (Imp Aces) + Autothrusters (Starviper) + Stealth Device (M3A, Slave-1): 35 pts

o/c you don't have to run him like that (i quite enjoy Targeting Comp (imp aces) instead of SD) but Soontir likes EPTs that give him 1 and only 1 stress which is what makes PTL so good on him, however Daredevil Soontir flies completely differently. if you don't stress Soontir you might as well fly a different interceptor.
i don't know about Tomax,he's good but i don't know if he's good enough to make up for the inherent bomber weakness in this game, also if you have the card (IDK if it's in Imp Vets) Plasma Torps about as good as Proton Torps and a point cheaper too, munitions failsafe tends to be better on ordnance that rolls fewer dice, the proton torps 4 dice will usually get through, also long rage scanners and munitions failsafe occupy the same slot, Extra Munitions might be what you're thinking of

Ahh yeah, those are both modifications... I guess I could just drop the failsafe and play a point under for now.

I like the interceptor, but a tough ship to fly, it pops kinda easy sometimes. Something to try is Deathfire, Vessery, Ryad: Upgrades to flavor. Below is a version I play frequently. You don't have all the upgrades for exactly what I have, but feel free to play with the upgrades or Proxy what you don't have.

"Deathfire" (28) - TIE Bomber

Homing Missiles (5), Conner Net (4), Extra Munitions (2), Long-Range Scanners (0)

Colonel Vessery (36) - TIE Defender

Trick Shot (0), TIE/D (0), Tractor Beam (1)

Countess Ryad (36) - TIE Defender

Push The Limit (3), TIE/x7 (-2), Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
