Good Magnets for CC Campaign Map Stickers?

By Yipe, in Star Wars: Armada

My Armada group is about to launch our Corellian Conflict Campaign and I'm prepping the final details this week. I've laminated my map and I'm going to use a magnetized dry erase board to hold the stickers in place, but I'm not sure which magnets to buy to put the stickers on.

The CC Campaign stickers appear to be about 5/8" in diameter. I'd rather not use ceramic magnets because I've heard they leave a black dusty residue over everything, but I don't want to spend a fortune on magnets either. Any ideas of where I might pick up decent quality magnets, either locally or online? I'm in Portland, OR so I don't have access to Hobby Lobby locally, but other than that we have all the major DIY and Craft stores here. It looks like I'll need about 100 magnets in total.

Neodymium magnets are the industry standard for miniature games. Buy two of these, 100 magnets for less than $25 and they will hold forever, even if the board is tipped upside down or spun without slipping. This was a 2 second google search as well, it is entirely possible to find these at a better price point. But these are 1/2" diameter so the sticker should sit perfectly over them if they are 5/8".

Thank you very much, BrobaFett!

Any time! Best of luck with CC.

I got a crap load of tiny neodymium magnets from these guys for pretty cheap a while back. Haven't compared prices on anything bigger than tiny, but a comparison point:

I wouldn't go with rare earths. They can be a pain to remove if you decide you want to.

I'd go with sheet magnets. You can get a pack at any office supply store. They're easy to pull up, thin so they don't stand way off the surface, and much less likely to break if you happen to drop/two magnets clack together.

Just put the stickers on the sheet and cut them out with scissors or an exacto. A circular punch and die works well if you have one. I used a small cookie cutter and a hammer.

As long as you get the rare earths a little thick they should be ok. The magnets on the board side are pretty darn weak so they won't be vice-locked. Plus, there will be the paper barrier between them and the board that should help you get some purchase.

Sheet Magnets are definitely cheaper though, and work great if you are careful because they will slip if you jar the board.

Definitely going to second the Neodymium magnets. They with great, and I like the fact that they stick out off the board.

Go to your local hardware store and buy some nylon washers, and get them with a 1/4 hole in the middle. Spray paint to the color you like, and then put the sticker on the washer, the magnet in the washer, and put a piece of electric tape on the back so the magnets come off easier. This is what I did and it turned out great.

Here's the thread where I made the map, it includes a link to the magnets I used.
