Free Admirals

By sideshowgames1221, in Star Wars: Armada

What is the opinion of having a free or negative costed general?

Like a free (or near free) general that has literally no effect?

Or generals that bring debuffs to your fleet. The thought that popped in my head was a general that decreased the hp of your ships. It could bring back the old dual isd list as it is giving more points to work with. Could even make a Rogue One reference saying how easily those Star destroyers were destroyed.

Just spit bawling here, you guys have any thoughts?

I wish I could run without a commander. Sometimes I find myself taking Dodonna or Screed at the last moment simply because I need to have them, not because my fleet is built around them and they can really go in any fleet.

I can't really see a commander that would debuff you fleet and give you points. Anything that would hurt a fleet is likely never to get played because the game is already unforgiving as it is and that would just make it harder.

I would like a generic 1 point or 10 point fleet admiral. Someone who gives a tiny buff but is essentially just a generic person.

You know what would be really cool is if they released a pack where its just five generic Imperial fleet admirals and five generic rebel fleet officers that cost 1 point and give no buff and for a few they left the name blank so we the player could write in our own name.

Negative admirals I'm against, because they would be admitting that a faction is effectively 25 points too expensive (cheapest admiral plus discount) or you'd need a 25 point negative effect and I'm not sure I'd use it unless it was somehow broken. As for cheap, discount, admirals I'm for a 10 point admiral that basically said "at the start of the first round, assign a token of your choice to each of your ships".

"Meesa Admiral" Jar Jar

It's been a long day so I'm tired, but isn't that Tarkin, a 36 point Admiral, but better?

(Edit: oh I see, just the first round. Carry on. Long day).

Tarkin is every round. This is just once.

And he's 38 points

I actually wrote 38 first then second guessed myself.

Gawd, if that happens, i'm going to the dark side :D

Who says jar jar wouldn't be dark side lol.

Easy, Jukey. I play rebel and am not fond of Jar Jar, so of course he'd be the admiral on a ship i REALLY want added to Armada. It's my lot in life to suffer... :)

'Meesa real gooda spaceships, Ani!

Admiral JarJar Binks

Your opponent may relocate any two of your ships during deployment so they are directly facing each other, head on.

-25 points

Admiral Jar Jar would provide a solution to the lifeboat flotilla problem. As lets be frank, if you were running Jar Jar, you would be putting him on a flotilla and charging him straight at the enemy in the hopes he'd be gotten rid of...

Guilty as charged :D

Any admiral not doing anything useful or even harming your ships' performance has long since been force-choked to death, and can no longer be included in Armada fleets...

After seeing the Jar Jar tangent of this thrend I think there is a big problem with negative point generals. They throw a huge wrench into scoring.

"Oh look, I just destroyed one of your floats and got no points in doing so."

And also, by their very nature Admirals are very valuable to every fleet. You actually want to protect them in game, and will work to do so.

With Jarjar..... not so much. Liability removed.

X wing doesn't seem to care with their -2 point upgrades

Officer of the Admiralty - 5 points

the presence of this commander allows the unlimited recruitment of none unique officers and sqns. Plus one single named officer and squadron

how about that? Gives a slight liability in list building but that's it

Is there an appropriate strategy for 51 Z95 squadrons?

Or 16 Decimators? Or 24 phantoms and Rhymer?

I'd like some more variation in Imperial Admirals, but other than that I feel the costing system works fine as is, your Admiral is a resource that gives a benefit, usually a big benefit, and needs protecting to maintain that benefit.

No reason why you cannot try a house rule with friends though.

Nothing I put over rides the costs so you'd still have to pay for those sqns..... can you put 51 z95 sqns in 133 points now?

or to put it another way.. pay 5 points and limit your self to a single named character

Just an english misunderstanding. Thats a much better way of saying it. I figured what you meant originally but can see why four dogs was confused.
