huge 500 point games happening this Sunday.
Considering using Dormitz and dropping my raider basically in my opponent's face. Don't epic ships deploy last? Oh man!

Here's the thing I've come to realize about Epic: play however you want!
But if I'm not mistaken the rule goes like this: if you're playing casually, huge ships set up in pilot skill order EDIT: along with small and large ships; if you're playing in a tournament, huge ships set up first (in pilot skill order), then small and large ships (in pilot skill order).
Edited by ParakitorDunno if you can really go much farther with Dormitz and a raider, but putting Dormitz up lets you set up other stuff really far into the field in epic, since you can set up, up to R2 in epic Dormitz can give you up to Range 4 into the board to start.
Sorry, Epic Ships deploy first, but activate last.

Only in tournament play, which is clearly not the case if our friend here is playing a 500 point mega EPIC game. The Huge ship rules have a section all about setup, but no mention of any change to deployment timing:
QuoteHuge ships follow all standard setup rules. However, during setup, a huge
ship’s bases may extend outside of Range 1 (or a mission’s specified setup
area) as long as the ship fully occupies the length of that area.
(Emphasis mine.)
More practically usually you want a turn or two to power up all the guns before you get into the fray... right??

Good point but if you can deploy in the enemy's face - ordnance tubes... ordnance's shorter range and no energy requirement is your friend
First of all...Congrats. 500 pts is a super fun format, ideal to play 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3.
While going Epic you must adapt a little concepts like game surface. With 1000 pts on the table you need a bare minimun of 6x3...but if you can 6×4 or 8x4, better.
And if there are Objectives and the like much better. With 1000 pts on the table playing simply to kill involves collisions, a lot of dice rolling and a fun but incomplete experience. So Deployment, Reinforcements, Random Encounters... Good things.
Good luck and trust me... you will want more...
Ahhhh...and about Energy...in my experience it is very often a wise idea to start with weapons fully loaded.

Just to add a bit to the rules: it'd help you to know which versions of the rules you will be using.
Eg will the huge ships deploy first, as in the tournament ruleset?
Will the huge ships start with all weapons charged and full energy on the ships, also as in the tournament ruleset?
Overall, the tournament rule changes were made for good reasons, so I'd always use them.

Thanks for reminding me about huge ship deploying first. Guess I can't do it. I generally prefer to use tournament rulings even for casual games. Though in this case we are doing away with the point limits. Also no epic point limits - I figure if someone bought 3 raiders... this will be an opportunity for them to use them!

Not anymore. The new rules let you start with full energy on the ship and all secondary weapons.
Tourney set up rules #8:
Players assign Energy tokens to each of their Huge ships and their equipped secondary weapons up to their respective energy limits.
And I'm playing a 600 pointer (per player) tomorrow, too!!
