Station-Mines-Nasty Crit Timing issue

By ovinomanc3r, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

This came up during a match.

A ship end its movement at distance 1 of a mine and overlapping the station.

The player choose to resolve the mines before.

Roll a crit. The faceup damage card was the one that says when overlap a obstacle suffer a damage card.

Question:

Does this damage card take effect during this overlapping?

I was not sure.

The player resolved the station after the mine so maybe yes but in fact the timing was the same so maybe you are not overlapping when the crit take effect. Not sure if I am explaning this well.

Anyway: thanks!

Per the RRG: when a player has 2effects with the same timing, he may resolve in any order.

I would argue that since he chose mines first, the mine Crit effect triggers off landing on the station.

He probably was hoping for a Crit that he could then immediately discard using the station's effect. He just got unlucky.

Yes. He is a fine player and asked me just for clarification as I have more time playing. As I was not sure, so he decide throwing a die and he took the extra damage.

I think, he must take that damage

I don't agree - the overlapping had already happened, clearly before the card was dealt. The stack of triggered effects was already resolving.

But I'm at an airport right now with no access to the cards or RRG, so can't back it up with actual analysis.

Quotes:

  • Damaged Controls x2 - Crew - When you overlap a ship or obstacle, deal a face down damage card to your ship (in addition to all other obstacle effects)

Minefields: If a ship ends its movement at distance 1 of an objective token, remove that objective token from the play area and roll 2 blue dice. That ship is dealt 1 facedown damage card for each or icon rolled. If there is at least 1 icon, deal the first damage card faceup.

obstacles: When a ship or squadron overlaps an obstacle after executing a maneuver, it resolves an effect that depends on the type of obstacle it overlapped

IMO the crit comes inmediately when you overlap the obstacle while mines and obstacles came after you move. So as the crit came from a mine and the mine came after the movement, we are not at a "when" overlapping, we are "after" overlapping so no extra damage. But I could be perfectly wrong. The obstacles wording looks a bit confusing for me with a when and an after in the same sentence.

Gracias man.

So, indeed, in my opinion, the trigger for all three effects is "when overlapping after executing a maneuver", but at that point only two of those (mine and station) are triggered and put on the "queue" in the order chosen by the player. By the time the crit card gets dealt, the triggering condition is over (even if the queue is still resolving).

The Armada rules are essentially trigger-based rather than step-based, at least where upgrade cards are concerned (for an example of a step-based game, check out the excellent Sentinels of the Multiverse).
