Condition Cards / Obstacles question

By ge0rd1eb4lls, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all. Big debate going on about this so I figured you guys might be able to help.

If a tractor beam attack hits, and is chucked less than graciously onto an asteroid, if they roll a critical they suffer that critical. That's fair.

My question is this - if they are subject to the ISYTDS condition card, does that critical card activate or do they draw a new one?

It hinges on 2 things. Does the obstacle damage count as part of your attack, and is the tractor beam token resolved in step 7 or step 8 of the rules?

Really specific question I know, but would love some input!

Not as specific as you think - Boba Fett was FAQed to trigger of tractor/asteroid interaction - i see no reason why Kylo should work different.

If the token resolves in step 7, AND if the asteroid interaction is deemed "part of the attack" then yes, it makes sense for it to count.

If it isn't part of the attack, then it can't trigger, and if the token resolves in step 8, then it can't trigger.

That's the crux if the issue I guess.

Yeah, this - with the caveat that I rewally wouldn't be surprised to see that Boba ruling reversed. I've always thought it was a little questionable and could lead to some super wonky interactions, particularly, as ever, with Maarek Stele.

Technically it IS an attack if you use the Tractor Beam Cannon.

The Quaddy STTA Action card would simply piggyback on that ;)

Fortunately, it's irrelevant whether the asteroid damage is considered part of the attack or not, because that isn't what IWSYTDS is looking for. It states "When you suffer critical damage during an attack, [so-on]", so as long as the damage is dealt during the resolution of an attack against the target, the source doesn't actually matter. And since the obstacle effect resolves immediately upon the overlap occuring, it would go off in Step 7 while the attack is still resolving.
