Is Essential Kill essentially broken?

By HappyDaze, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Reading over the full text of Essential Kill from Savage Spirits, we have this line: "When making a combat check that does not involve either using the Gunnery skill or operating a non-starship weapon, the character may..."

So ask yourself the following two questions:

  • Does your attack use the Gunnery skill?
  • Does your attack utilize a non-starship weapon?

If either of those is a "Yes" then the talent doesn't apply.

So, per RAW, it only works with weapons mounted on starships that do not use Gunnery...

I think that it should say "When making a combat check that does not involve either using the Gunnery skill or operating a starship/vehicle weapon, the character may...", but for those that insist on dogged RAW, this talent seems pretty useless.

This is why I wish the books were written in erasable ink.

From what Sam said on the O66 episode the intention was to exclude the non gunnery based emplacement/vehicle weapons as well, but yes its a terrible description and yours is much more sensible.

That's some pretty bad wording, right there. But hey, look on the bright side: it serves as a great red flag for any player or GM who tries to play that exactly as written.

Edit: out of curiosity, what's wrong with using the non-gunnery emplacements for the Talent? I don't have Savage Spirits, so I'm not familiar.

The RAI was that the killing should be "personal". The hunter vs the hunted. Using hand held weapons to bring down your foe with skill rather than overwhelming force.

Got it!

On p. 30 of Savage Spirits, under the description for Essential Kill, it reads: "When making a combat check that does not involve either using the Gunnery skill or operating a non-starship weapon..." Is this an error? It more or less implies that it can only be used with vehicle weapons that somehow don't use Gunnery, while the shorter talent description on p. 25 simple states "a non-Gunnery combat check."

Yes, the wording there needs improvement. The intent was that you can’t use the talent with weapons that have the Gunnery skill, or when firing starship/vehicle mounted weapons; it should be personal weapons only. It will get cleaned up in the next reprint.

Hope this helps and thanks for playing!

Since I won't be buying another copy of the book, it would be really nice if this correction shows up in official errata.

Ain't that the truth. This attitude of "it will be in the next reprint" is getting dam annoying and somewhat rude. Just publish a dam errata

This book had a number glaring of editing problems. Look at the force power too....

We should totally publish a fan errata from the answers in the Developer Answered Questions forum thread.

We'll call it, "The Dam Errata: Are You Happy Now?"

:D
