Anyone remember inspector gadget? Making Penny's book.

So I'm looking to craft a similar thing. I'm looking at a book or shoulder bag that can be used to help research, craft, slice and diagnose things.

However i might have hit a snag. If I use the free cybernetics from modular hardware to get a digital lockpick installed... When I go to pick locks with this droid I don't get its lockpick talent of bypass security do I? It's merely the bonus blue die for an assist right?

Also is there a way to install other things in a droid? I understand you can do the whole cybernetic hidden weapon thing, but what about having a data breaker or intelligent toolbox?

Sure, anything can be installed into a droid so long as your GM approves. integrated doesn't mean inconspicuous either, a Heavy Repeating Blaster can be installed in a droid, but everyone will know.

How do the rules on that work? Does it take hard points or is their an encumbrance limit etc.? Or is it just GM's desgresion?

sure. so Droid PC's (and therefore by extension any Droid) can integrate any equipment they own into their chassis for no Hard Point cost. The encumbrance is still tallied as normal, and no specific benefits are gained by integration. So an integrated pistol will still need a maneuver to "draw". Its also not automatically hidden, anyone checking the droid for that pistol will find it quite easily.

Ok... And do you know if it's simply a blue bonus die if me and "the book" are trying to get open a security lock? Can I still get the benefit from its bypass security talent?

No you wont benefit from its bypass security talent on checks you make...

But there are a few ways this "book" would benefit you beyond a single boost die:

IF it is making the check and your "assisting" it. During narrative time you can contribute your Intellect (but none of your talents) while it contributes its Computers ranks and any applicable talents it has to a "Skilled Assistance Check" This is a decent option if your character is completely devoid of Computers related skill or talents.

Another alternative is if your character is a Droid Tech and has Improved Speaks Binary. Your "book" will then grant 2 Boost to you rather than 1 when it assists you.

If the task is not too complex then it gives you a way of achieving simple computer related tasks without your character actually doing the job. eg: Stealthily plug it into a terminal in a building and walk away to distract the guards while it opens the back door for your buddies. swing by and pick the little thing up later.

Of course all this could be achieved with the "custom tool" schematic as well. Create a complex data breaker built into a data pad that grants the boost dice, and may even provide additional benefits when being used depending on your Mechanics roll to make it.

In reality Droids excel in 2 situations. First is where you have need of a skill regularly, but instead of investing in it you make a mono-task droid to perform the work. The second is in Minion groups. Get 4 or 5 cheap minion droids all programmed to the same task and watch out as they take over!

On a side note I think the rules for building minion Droids is a little clunky and leads to complex or strange mixed groups. I would suggest if your wanting to make a "team" of identical droids then only roll the dice once for Mechanics and once for Computers. Pay the full credit cost for all the droids your wanting to make, and agree before hand how many your making. I would suggest the GM take this opportunity to add some setback but in the end you have a group of identical droids (which makes using them much easier)
