KickStarter: Giant Killer Robots!

By Trevor Goodchild, in X-Wing Off-Topic

For those folk interested in mech warfare this KickStarter shows some promise:

For those Battletech fans - think more Soalris VII than wide open fields lance+ level combat.

Curiously it's form Weta Workshop (yes the Lord of the Rings props/effects crew)...

Gameplay shows some promise and has some very interesting concepts, but as others have pointed out it could be a bit of a diciest if there aren't options to mitigate good/bad rolls. Albeit you can't one shot a Heavy Hitter in this game, so perhaps that balances things out.

So whaddya think?

having played several iterations it is very heavy on luck of the card draw followed by luck of dice rolls. That said energy management, tactical use of resources, and feeling the right time to use one off abilities make for an engaging game. The 4 way battle royal makes for a great 2 hours and the 2v2 team play looks to be very interesting depending on how the team work itself is allowed. I'm backing at Pilot but considering moving up to Painter as you get the full painted set and a second set of Heavy Hitters unpainted.

Thanks for the feedback on the gameplay. That is the one (and very major) area of concern I have with this project/game. Sounds like the mechanics aren't so bad you won't enjoy playing it though given you're backing it?

Based on luck of the draw.... sounds a little like Arkham Horror the Card Game ;)

Working out the best way and proper order to use energy and cards in hand to get the best combos is the tactical side and quite fun. Finding out the damage is low because of a dice roll... The sponsor cards make room for lots of shenanigans (giving food poising to the opponent pilot) and taking buildings can become a bit deal as you choose positioning for taking vs positioning for attack / defense.

Giga Robo does the customizing to pilot + mech = combos better but I can see GKR having a better tournament / League organized play aspect. In the game universe these are teams in competition with a fan base and a sponsor base. League play with player costs, sponsorship bonuses, and maintenance costs could make for all kinds of fun. A deck for shenanigans between games would be cool.

Ok it looks kinda cool. Went ahead and backed. Now need to do more research.

Crabbok - it's worth working your way through the various videos to get a feel for the gameplay.

Of note Weta recently posted an update which indicates there are more dice mitigation measures that haven't been seen yet in the Sponsor cards, as well as in Pilot abilities/upgrades.

trying to figure out if the pilot miniatures are worth it. Doesn't seem like it to me. All they do is track achievements?

Yep at this stage it just looks like a different way to track achievements rather than using a token. It doesn't appeal at all to me. I guess maybe in a tournament setting or the like it would allow another element of visual customisation with your pilot painted up in a theme that matches your customer painted Heavy Hitter.

On that note given all the demand in the KS comments, Weta are mad if they don't offer the unpainted HHs as a separate $$ add on as many also appear underwhelmed by the the pilot figs.

Yeah I wouldn't mind a set of those but they cost too much at the moment and those higher pledge tiers just seem very "Meh". The core pledge seems to have everything I need.

I agree. Core pledge has all the goodies I need thus far, things would have to change significantly for me to up it or throw in an add on.
