(RPG) Steampunk ideas for L5R

By Lord Phrofet, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

Going to be runing a game at a local gaming convention in the summer. This year's theme for the convention is "Steampunk" but I have no idea how to input the theme into a 4-6 hr self contained L5R game.

With that in mind I am open to all and any suggestions. Was thinking of using the alternative history with the trains (can not remember the name right now) but one of the following themes for the next year is Western which fits that a lot better.

Thank you in advance for any assistance!

Well, there's the generation before Rokugan 2000. It's a while since I read it, but it was a less technologically advanced version.

Other than that, this could be inspirational. http://jchalfant.com/web/?p=661

Finally, have you considered looking at some of Miyazaki films? Howl's Moving Castle and Castle in the Sky combine magic and steampower a bit, although they don't have a huge Eastern feel.

Go full blown steampunk Iron Empire style. Add some elements of Samurai 7, and some other bits here and there.

The Crab Clan in steam-driven power armor. The Crane Clan in high culture and fashion. The Lion Clan mastering the art of rapid deployment, and conflicting with the Unicorn Clan's cavalry. The Mantis Clan zeppelins duking it out in the skies against the Phoenix Clans' flying kite ships.

Personally, I would go more "Silk-punk" with L5R than Steampunk, but it can be done.

Keep Rokugan mostly as is, but introduce an invading force: Thrane, much recovered from the plague. Upgrade their tech and make them your Steampunk element.

I've got another anime about steampunk-ish samurai that can serve to bring some inspiration. Great news, it's only about 8 minutes long too!

Rapid Rouge

Thanks for all the ideas guys. I was hoping to do a small element of steampunk instead of "reinventing the wheel" although if I can't figure something like that out I am probably going to run samurai 7 style game.

The biggest issue is that the game will only be 3-5 hrs(6 hr slot but choosing characters and explaining system/fluff can take a while) so I need something that wraps itself up rather nicely.

Again thank you all for your input.

Side note the con is polycon in San Luis Obispo CA if anyone on the Central coast is looking for a local gaming con.

You might also want to look for episodes of Samurai Gun from ADV as well.
