New to the game; new to painting miniatures

By Spitty81, in Imperial Assault Painting and Modification

I picked up the game shortly after Christmas and decided a couple of weeks into January that I should paint the miniatures. I've never painted miniatures before but I think I'm getting better.

Onar Koma is my son's favourite piece; I painted him last night. One and a half hour's worth of work. I think I did all right. My son's really pleased with it. :)

Very well done for a first effort.

Much better than my first effort - a heavy stormtrooper.

Pretty good! Kudos on starting here. Most people seem to start with Stormtroopers, but then by the time they get to #9 they've improved so much so quickly that #1 and #9 look so far apart.

And don't worry about messing up; there are fairly simple ways to strip the paint off and start again if you feel the need to.

At first the learning rate is amazing by just practicing and trying what works for you. The most important advice is to:

- Thin your paint

And the next one is:

- Use a good brush.

And if you're going to take pictures:

- Get a magnifying visor to see what you're painting.

And if your paint is thin enough, it is easy to paint over without needing to clean or strip the old paint.

I only took up this hobby about a year ago and I am pretty happy with where I am now. I would echo everything @a1bert has said, and also add

Thin your black wash with something like Lahmian Medium when painting light coloured figures. Particularly Stormtroopers/Snowtroopers.

This is really a side effect of a1bert's first tip... Don't aim to perfectly cover an area in one go. Thinner layers will produce a better finish and preserve more detail, at the cost of taking a bit more time for multiple coats.

Let the mini dry before applying another coat - a few times I have gone back to a mini when a small pocket of paint (or, more usually, wash) isn't perfectly dry, and made a mess of what would have been a nicely shaded area.

Keep posting your work :)
