How I know the game is great

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing

I think the game is in a really good place. There are a few things I'd like to see fixed and improved. These are not mutually incompatible statements.

But, yes: it's a good time to be an X-Wing player.

Its nowhere as well-rounded Armada is right now (Armada literally has 1 ship/squad that is pointless...the Phantom) but its still in a good state. Would be in a better state if they'd errata the JM5K already though.

Not to bunny-trail further, but what's wrong with JM5K in Armada? I'm just getting into it, but it seems it was a balance for the Rebel Squadron dominance....I'm only speaking to "hearing" and "watching" experienced Armada Players, as I am not.

Nothing, that 1 ship i mentioned is the Phantom. JM5K in Xwing is the issue. In Armada it just feels like its doing the wrong job but its fine otherwise.

So I'm guessing the Phantom is underwhelming? ...I don't have the latest Imp Squads.

With the A-wing returning in Episode 8, I think we'll start seeing older ships receiving new attention, but we'll have to be patient and wait for the media that feature them. I'm really glad to see the Rogue One ships so well balanced. I think it bodes well for the much more challenging task of revitalising existing ships that were designed conservatively when the game was so young.

Plz. Armada has design issues. Like squadrons. Which are a hammer good against everything. Countered by their own kind.

But Xwing has bork lists.

They both need refinement.

We live in a beautiful age where you can auto spawn squads in vassal and competitively play with your favorite plastic toys in person.

This is why they'll likely not see much competitive play. Balanced, or at least balanced against the declared benchmark, the TIE fighter, is no longer enough to make a ship good in x-wing.

"Each of the three factions has more than one amazing power lists that competent players can pick from and be uber competitive with."

- I'm not sure that's true but even if it were that puts the number of viable combinations at six.

"Casual players can have fun with the zillion combinations and pilots"

- and yet are lumbered with inconsistent balance.

"Epic is getting a scum ship"

- which leaves it one ship behind, no? It also continues the dubious practice of packing meta-warping cards and balance fixes for other ships in order to drive sales.

"Videos and podcasts galore"

- of highly variable quality.

"There's so much good stuff going on that there is actually NOTHING worth complaining about."

- If some things are good, don't look to improve the bad? Can't say I can back that attitude.

I think the game's in a better state than it's been for a while but perfect? Nothing in the world is perfect. Nothing in the world cannot be improved.

You don't have to be standing in a trainwreck to see how to make things better. The game's balance is better than it's been but the game is still affected by mechanical limitations from its initial design it can't break free from, narrowing design space and a distribution model that drives buying things you don't want for a card or two you do.

Do the forums make the game out to be worse than it is? Possibly. But to claim it's perfect? I'm not certain you know what the word means.

95% of the pilots are unplayable, and about half of them don't even make it to the casual tables.

This isn't a golden era. It's a guilded one with a veneer of gold at the top for a handful of ships and then it's trash all the way past them. The gap between good and bad widens every wave, and you guys want to tell me how great things are? Nah.

I've been playing various strategy / miniature games since I was very little. It's "my thing". My wife of 15 years has never really enjoyed playing with "my thing"... but she does like X-Wing.

X-Wing got my wife to play with "my thing"... so it must be great.

All other arguments therefore become invalid.

I dunno, the positivity list is kinda OP at the moment...

I don't agree that the u-wing doesn't show up much because it's 'balanced', even though I see a lot of people saying that. I believe that's because it doesn't really give the rebels anything they need. And I don't mean 'something overpowered'; I mean something that fills a gap in their repertoire. It's another large base (relatively) low agility ship, but one with only a forward arc. Not many of them see play in any faction - except as a way to move Palp around.

It looks cool though, and the movable wings are fun, so it's not like it brings nothing to the table. ;)

I also believe that generally the game is in a pretty good place. Rebels seem a bit lacking, but I'm still not sure if that's because everyone is enjoying the new toys the other factions have, or if they're genuinely underpowered in comparison.

"everything is perfect" is as guilty of unsubstantiated hyperbole as the doomsayers are. It's fairly evident that X-Wing's not a bad game. But perfect it most certainly is not.

You, and some others on this thread are completely missing the point.

There are lots of whiney, whinging, this is wrong, nerf this.... type threads. I understand that, I get the need to express your thoughts on how things could / should be better (either as a type of cathartic therapy or the possible hope that somebody somewhere who has influence on rule development is listening)

This is a thread for people who are loving the game as it is, and want to express that. It's like a big group hug.

I mean bro... you're harshing my mellow

(is that the right use of the vernacular... whilst I am clearly hip, and down with the kids, I am never 100% sure these sayings mean what I think they mean)

Easily doable without claiming perfection.

It is perfect... from a certain point of view

You're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view

The point of view of a man without a dictionary.

As an exclusively casual player, and (nearly) exclusively Imperial player, I feel like wave 10 was a huge hit.

Tie Strikers are great fun, the Upsilon is wonderfully menacing, and all the new tech from the past couple months makes for really diverse (read: probably bad) Tie S/F builds. But they're super fun.

Next on the list is a Hyperwave Zeta Leader (or A Score to Settle Omega Leader) + Backdraft and Quickdraw with Juke + Comms.

Plus, scavenger crane + advanced protons super Guri? What a time to be alive!

I played x wing tonight.

I played the ships I wanted to play.

Had a blast.

So did I. Which kind of demonstrates just how good the game could be if you got rid of the corrosive elements that are spoiling tournament play.

I'm playing ships and whizzing them around, making blocks with careful positioning, taking my shots and sometimes missing and sometimes hitting, with ships flying away wounded and having to be careful rather than just folding up under a volume of unstoppable fire. It was a great game. It's a shame tournament X-Wing is the antithesis of that.

DEPLOY THE GARRISON!

  • Duchess - Lone Wolf, Adaptive Ailerons, Lightweight Frame
  • Pure Sabacc - Adaptability
  • Deathfire - Concussion Missiles, Conner Net, Extra Munitions, Long Range Scanners
  • Academy Pilot
  • Academy Pilot

ALL SYSTEMS WILL BOW BEFORE THE FIRST ORDER

  • Kylo Ren - A Score To Settle, Fire Control System, General Hux, Inspiring Recruits, Pattern Analyser
  • Zeta Leader - Snap Shot
  • Epsilon Leader
  • Epsilon Squadron Pilot

How I know the game is great: pretty much every time I play it, I have fun.

Win or lose, doesn't matter. Competitive or casual, doesn't matter. Rebel, Scum, Imperial, doesn't matter. I invariably have fun playing this game, with very few, very rare exceptions.
