Seems like a pretty aggressive timeline for a May release. We shall see.
I don't think it is that aggressive. Episode VIII was originally slated for a May 2017 release and shooting had begun in January, and then was pushed back for a December release to allow for more production time. That seems to have led to an extended shooting schedule (they finished in August I think?). I think we may see that trend continue. The December releases have been very successful for Star Wars films so far and extending the shooting schedule will give them time for reshoots without freaking out moviegoers.
Is anyone else concerned, like me, that I won't be able to see Han's mentor as anything other then Woody? I'm worried he is so recognizable and doesn't have the acting ability to make me forget who he is.

Nah. I didn't sit there thinking, "Hey, it's Woody Harrelson!" during the Hunger Games movies.

Yeah, I would never watch the Hunger Games movies.

Didn't think it during Zombieland, either.
What about woody's performance in "now you see me" (I think that's what it was called)
I might. I still see him as his character on Cheers...

Couldn't stand Cheers, so virtually no exposure to any of the characters from it. Most came from when they'd be shoe-horned into episodes of Frasier.
True Detective season 1, Out of the Furnace, Natural Born Killers. I like Mr.Harrelson. I was going to just say I like Woody but I wouldn't want you to get the wrong idea...or maybe its the right idea.
Harrelson is a phenomenal actor. Sure, he's got a recognisable face, but so do lots of actors! I didn't sit watching Rogue One thinking "hey, that's Idi Amin" when Forest Whitaker came onscreen.
I'm far more worried about the guy playing Han. No idea what he's like as an actor, but it's such an iconic role - and one so strongly associated with Harrison Ford - that getting it right is going to be seriously difficult.
I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. My only reservation is if the kid they've got playing Han is up to the task. Harrison Ford has some pretty big shoes for him to fill. This whole movie hinges on if this new actor is believable as Han Solo. The script could be great but if the actor isn't up for the task it wont matter. Hopefully he does a better job of playing Han Solo than Jai Courtney did as Kyle Reese in the last Terminator flick.
You're all forgetting King Pin, Harrelson's best flick.
I don't understand all the worry around Woody in this movie. The guy has been in a ridiculous amount of films, in various roles, and I have always been able to disassociate one character he has portrayed from another, along with many other actors who have filled various roles. I find it funny to think of how little in the way of movies I had seen Harrison Ford in at the time, not once did I think while watching any of the Indiana Jones movies as a kid, 'Oh look, there's Han Solo'...
I am kinda with ghatt and edwardavern in regards to the new guy... But will wait and see. The one thing I think Disney understands (and rightly so), is the tremendous number of fans there are of Star Wars, and how, like most fans of such a genre, are going to be critical - especially with such an iconic character as Mr Solo. So one would hope that in this regard, they have put a lot of thought into casting such a role... Yes, there's the idea that Disney know that they will make a pile of cash with this movie, just because of the subject matter, regardless. But I hope this isn't the case.
On a slightly different topic, another question for me will be: What accent will Boba Fett have in his movie? And I wonder if he will appear in the Solo movie to set up that ol' Solo/Fett adversity (even just as a fleeting appearance), and wet the appetites of those gagging to see Mr Fett again...
The future of the Boba Fett movie seems pretty spotty, at this point I'm not even holding out hope that it's going to happen at all.
If the Fett movie gets made, just go the logical route: Daniel Logan.
A logical choice for sure, but does he actually have the acting chops to be a lead? Doesn't look like he's had much of an acting career outside of Star Wars.
Well, maybe Woody will play a Wookiee. Then you will NOT have the recognizability problem.

I did. Well, the first at at least. Did not bother with the following. But I did say the same in guardians of the galaxy and that is a movie Woody was not even in. ;-)

Never even heard of that one, so no — I didn’t think of that, either.

No, I have no worries. He's good . Watch Hail Caesar by the Coen brothers if you don't believe me. He's in that one, and he steals every scene he's in.
