Variable.

Getting an actual force together is cheaper than most games, but still setting you back around $150.

The problem is it requires an ass-ton of Terrain to play. And "requires" is it indeed - you can't really play the game properly with a half-assed Solution.

If you've got a Gaming Store and an Established group to latch onto, then its Cheap.

If you're the guy woh has to build/make/buy terrain to encourage other players, it can hurt.

The rules are free to download, single faction starters are between 39,95€ and 44,95€ (recommended retail price) the two two player starters they have are 89,95€ same goes for their two 300 point army boxes. But what you get in a single faction starter or a 2 player starter will be enough for learning the rules and the first couple of games, where you go from there is up to you.

And yes you need quite some terrain but there are many companies (Plastcraft 1 + 2, Warsenal (nice stuff though a little more expensive) Bandua, Micro Arts Studio) selling stuff for reasonable prices and if you have a friend/club you could split those costs.

I had more fun with BB 2nd ed than any other game before or since, but when they revised the rules for 3rd ed, while mostly for the better, they included a number of ancillary rules that I detest with a fiery passion that completely kill any possible enjoyment from the game.

You can pick up really cheap cardboard terrain from Corvus Belli themselves, they sell the cardboard buildings/boxes/bridges/ect... that come with the 2 player starter sets for like $10 per, it also includes the playmat. So for $20-30 bucks you can have a crap load of surprisingly decent terrain. I got two kits myself and the stuff was better than I expected.

Edit: The game itself is quite fun, one of the most involved tabletop skirmish games I've played.

It actually is. It is just random the effects of destroying a building. On a plus side, you can jump on top of buildings in Giga Robo.

I played 40k a zillion years ago and tried to get back into it but the expense and time required has kept all my miniatures still on the shelf.

I am enjoying playing Star Realms, and Dominion two excellent card games. Also Evolution: The Beginning.

Yeah, it just doesn't provide you with anywhere near the variety of the terrain required. I have Mototronica and Haephastus, but I havn't got the New Ju Jing stuff yet, so maybe that adds variety other than "Box" and "Box with Rim".

Back in the day...Car wars,battletech,dragonstar rising, renegade legion.

I really like where games have gone these days as far as eliminating the paperwork and charts and coming up with unique ways to do things....X wings movement...Malifaux RNG.

But I'm an old soul with this stuff and I still am fond of penciling in a bunch of armor dots on a record sheet.those were the days.

Yes the Red Veil one is different, it's still of course boxes but sizes are different, you get a bridge to cross between the big buildings but I haven't build mine yet, bought the box for the models and because I have nowhere near enough factions to play

I have two boxes the Red Veil and the one that was in the US Arania box. Gives a number of cargo boxes and like 3 or 4 buildings so between the two I have enough for a 150 point game. I did download and build a few other cardboard buildings.

But with a little work and some google fu you can get buy pretty cheap, compared to buying nice buildings anyway.

Well, I'm more than happy to be wrong on Red Veil at the very least - as I said, as a veyr long term Infinity Player, who did pick up Icestorm and such (I was the first person online in NA to get theirs at the time!) there was just not enough variety.

I remember lots of Terrain building back home, before they were available.

But as it was, Icestorm and Hephaestus was a good start, but really wasn't enough... Glad Red Veil give syou more.

Avalon Hills Flat Top.. Pacific carrier battles at its best.. That one time a year when we can gather 8-10 people (including 2 gamemasters) and a full weekend (including friday) to play. one US team, one Japanese team and a GM team each in their own room with charts, maps, counters and written orders to units through the GMs.. Full double blind game with lots of fog of war.. the tension is sometimes almost unbearable..

War in the Pacific playing with a Judge to add even more FoW to a game with plenty hidden deployment and movement. That air sea battles with bad recon reports and launching 40 DBs and TBs against a small fleet oiler scorted by 2 DDs... Because that TF was contacted by B 17s as a Carrier one.

Yes, fog of war is superb. Got tired of World in Flames because of that God's Eye all over the World.

Is it a copout to say Armada? Because Armada is the best!

Also love Rebellion. Wiz-War is one of my favorites also, as it is crazy fun. Twilight Imperium is great too, just wish it was faster.

And always love CMON games like Zombicide and hopefully soon Massive Darkness.

You can't hurl a giant robot across the map and kill it by smashing it into multiple buildings, can yo? Or gain 10 Power dice by exploiting a line of buildings to Super Rampage through (That was my play with Mega Gorghadra)

Kind of. I know I saw someone combo multiple attacks that moved the enemy and tossed them into multiple buildings in a turn.

Infinity. I actually like it MORE THAN X-WING (I apologise for the blasphemy). If a proper mission/objective-oriented gameplay would ever be introduced to Xwing (based on how Infinity solves this) I would die a happy man

Concordia. It's a lovely, relatively fast-moving eurogame about building a trade network in the Mediterranean (I know, I know). It's simple to teach but forces you into a ton of tough, interesting decisions which is generally what I look for in a boardgame.

On the other end of the spectrum is One Night Ultimate Werewolf, which I got introduced to when I was at last year's UK Games Expo for Yavin. It's a chaotic, often-hilarious social deduction game that plays in ten minutes flat and has gone down really well in my regular board game group.

Advanced Squad Leader is the greatest game ever. I actually started playing X-Wing a few months back because my schedule was no longer very conducive for ASL and I was looking for a lighter and quicker game. I manage to get an ASL scenario in about every couple of months or so (I only play FTF). In fact, I'm prepping a defense for a Valor of the Guards scenario (Stalingrad 1942 for the uninitiated) from Journal 11 to play next weekend. Funny. I was at the game store last week playing X-Wing and some kid was complaining about the amount of time an X-Wing Epic game takes. I just smiled and chuckled to myself ... "You have no idea kid. None."

Playing a Pandemic Legacy campaign with some buddies (also ASLers). That's been fun. We're poking away at it. We can only get together every couple of months (like ASL). We play some other stuff once in a blue moon (usually because we're short a Pandemic player) like Nations, Marco Polo, Khemet, The Napoleonic Wars, etc. I brought Star Wars Rebellion one night. Got a a 5 person Fury of Dracula game going one night. That was great fun.

So ASL, X-Wing, and Pandemic Legacy tops the bill right now. No real time for anything else as far as a regular gaming schedule.
