Shield Crafting Rules?

By Darth Poopdeck, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I am not 100% sure, but 2P51 might actually be part of that Gungan pbf party :D

Though we are more in line with military units as seen in the clone wars and we don't have encumbrance nor hands free for shields. Though my pilot does have a shield remote *g*

What's your point 2P51? That you were able to find a mention of a shield in the EU? Sure, there are dozens of mentions of shields in Star Wars. I said as much in my post. My point was that when you picture a group of Star Wars characters, how often do they have shields. Maybe one of them does, Ya, I can see that, but most of them? For me, an entire party decked out with shields just doesn't make work for me. Hey, maybe your's does? Actually, you playing with an entire party of Gungans would explain a lot.

Meesa made usa mad...hahahaha

Gahhh... if I thought my joke would lead to a feed full of Gungans I would never have made it.

And Yes, maybe if you are in an AoR style campaign, and in a squad of troopers and decked out in full battle armor, then a shield works. Of course you know the average player is just going to be walking around town with them making it that much more ridiculous.

*grin* I never miss a chance for Gungans.

Anyway, player with shield and player without shield. Guess who is who. It's a trick question. ;-)

LOL your secret is out 2P51. I guess maybe a Gungan is a kind of troll.

Since when does Sabine have shield. And Embo's strange hat is hardly iconic given his race did exist prior to his character. Although I suppose if you had a group of Kyuzo... maybe.

Since a few eps, the shield is literally on the picture, mando bracelets are awesome. Energy buckler, telling more would be spoilers, but I can check if there is good picture somewhere … nope, no good shots, I am pretty sure that we had seen similar small scale energy bucklers before though.

Joking aside. Can any of you really imagine Solo, Luke and Leia walking around with shields? Chewie maybe. Personal energy shields maybe but the 10 credit cost of the crafted shield seems to imply that it's likely just a big piece of metal.

Fair enough, I'm 3-4 episodes behind. Not sure if an energy buckler is exactly what the 10 credit crafted shield is though.

Given what most things cost in Star Wars, ten credits is dirt cheap even for a basic rectangular plate of something that's blaster-resistant, never mind something with a small force field generator.

Chewie for sure. Had the wookies not during the clone wars used sometimes large, big shields anyway?

Han? Never. :D If he really would need to go as heavy armed and armored as possible, I would assume he a) just installed proton torpedos to his falcon or b) hides behind chewies shield while firing from two blasters and keeps as mobile as possible.

Leia? I would not be surprised if she had used some energy buckler or something similar during one of the newer comics. Does not not seem like her usual equipment, but Leia is a very broad character, from leading a squadron in her N1 to battle to learning just a little bit of lightsaber combat. She sounds like a character who actually would add an energy or cortosis buckler to her offhand to make up for her lack of proper training with a lightsaber.

In general you see most star wars characters preferring to have their second hand free for either another weapon, using a rifle, etc being able to shoot and talking into your communicator, calling in for backup seems most of the better anyway than having a little extra defense from a small shield, and anything big becomes rather annoying to transport, especially if want to have it all the time.

The clone trooper example was used when fighting closed quarter on large space station with long, long corridors and nearly no cover. You do see shields rarely used by the clones, but those shields come for sure handy in such a situation.

This is how I see it also. There are going to be situations where a shield makes sense but in general it's not really how most characters would choose to roll. The issue I have with shields is that 3-4 Defense is a LOT of defense for 10 credits. So good in fact that it makes sense that a Han Solo type character is going to want to carry one from a mechanics perspective. I mean why not? What better option do they have for their off hand right? So good that it puts even non-min/maxers in a bit of a spot. Maybe they don't think shields are cool but 3-4 defense is a lot to give up for the sake of cool.

Not to mention that having such an easy option for obtaining Defense significantly devalues defensive armors (assuming you go by the current ruling that they don't stack) which cost significantly more.

Adding a personal shield generator should add two defense to your 5025 credits soak 3 leather jacket or 5250 credits soak 4 light armor (1 triumph and 4 Advantages) , meanwhile the 10 credits shields come with 3 defensive deflection 3 at best (13 advantages) and thus 1 extra against melee and 1 extra setback against range , but more likely with defensive 3 or deflection 2 defensive 1 for a starting character (4-6 advantages). Now that 10 credits price tag might be the real issue as that personal deflector shield is 10,000 credits and super-rare, but that one is hands free at least.

So I am totally with you that the price is an odd choice, especially as most non-crafting shields are quite pricy. That shown gungan shield for example is over 1,000 credits. Still, defense would be my least concern. 15 Advantages builds you pair of extremely deadly vibro rapiers. one with defensive 3 and deflection 3, while the other has a crit-rating of 1 and vicious 5 and a fourth hardpoint to further increase it's vicious rating with some mods and still has only has spend 12 advantages.

Lastly, I don't think that an energy buckler or something like a gungan would need a different template, as mentioned 10 credit price is odd, still it is a galaxy far, far away, they build repulsor cushions, because tech is so cheap, while food and water is so expensive.

For reference:

  1. 10 credits for the shield template for whatever reason. Just damage 2, like the cortosis shield btw.
  2. 900 credits for the cortosis shield with cumbersome 3, deflection 2 and defensive 2 and the cortosis quality.
  3. 1000 credits for the 2/2 gungan shield. -1 damage. so quite solid when you have a high brawn value.
  4. 1000 credits for the 1/1 energy buckler, which comes with the awesome Concussive 1 quality. 2 Advantages the target is staggered. That is the real deal shield.
  5. 1500 credits for the shield gauntless which works with brawl instead and comes with only deflection 2 and seems to be mainly offensive brawl weapon with +1 stun damage
  6. 10000 credits lastly for the sith shield, with the odd force power and mediocre defensive 1, deflection 2 and vicious 1 (with a crit rating of 4!).

So that 10 credits 8-11 advantage shield is comparable to most 1,000 credit shields. I really would not mind increasing the cost by one magnitude or two. ^_^

And darn, I haven't played a rapier fencer in ages, two rapiers, a blaster and an energy buckler sounds like fun concept for a space pirate. Arrr.

small mistake, accidently allowed for defensive 4 for the crafting shield as a 6 advantage example, but defensive 3 is the cap for crafting shields

They will certainly draw a lot of attention to themselves. I mean, those things are bulky and hard to hide….
