My Yavin experience, for the mildly interested...
I took :
Glaive + Predator + TIE /d + Tractor Beam
Glaive + Predator + TIE /d + Tractor Beam
Omicron + Darth Vader + Collision Detector
- Game 1 vs Hugh - Omega Leader / Ryad / Fel
Hugh was worried about Vader hitting Fel, and was too cautious with Omega Leader, so I was able to isolate Ryad and kill her after cutting off her escape routes. The shuttle also then blocked Fel and I was able to tractor him onto a rock (the Holy Grail of Tractor Beam usage ). He went down next turn, while OL killed the shuttle. After that I hunted him down for no further loss.
100 - 24 - WIN
- Game 2 vs Piers - Ketsu / Asajj
Piers and I went head-to-head, but his higher PS and stress/tractor effects took their toll, and my k-turns were blocked by his bases. I hurt Asajj but couldn't kill her, then had to focus on Ketsu in order to lose stress. I also hurt him, but couldn't take either out. My final salvo got me half hull on Asajj.
50-100 - LOSS
- Game 3 vs Mike - Paratanni
I lost lost this game on turn 1 when one of my dials slipped. Rather than doing a 1-bank left, the dial showed half-way between that and the neighbouring 1-hard turn. I offered to let Mike choose - he said to roll a dice and it came up as the turn. This left one defender stressed and facing the board edge. I kept it on, but it was stressed and missed the crucial first round of combat against Asajj. I did hurt her, but I was never going to win.
0-100 - LOSS
- Game 4 vs Dan - Norra / Dash
I decided to take on Norra first - neither ship is nice to face in the endgame, but I wanted to use my tractors while I still had them. A misjudged maneuver saw Norra bump a defender in the first round of combat. I proceed to one-turn kill her with both defenders (tractoring her so the bumped defender could still shoot) - Vader didn't even need to kick in to finish her. However from then Super Dash was basically unstoppable - he could do any maneuver, ignoring rocks, with both large base reposition actions after me thank to higher PS, and shoot all the while with a HLC with no penalty. I did my best, and managed to do 9 damage out of 10, but the dice totally blanked on the one turn I had to take the final point off him.
My opponent was a nice guy, but this game really demonstrated everything I dislike about turrets, especially Dash. They basically have the ability to completely ignore what I see as the fundamental point of X-wing, which is out-maneuvering and out-thinking your opponent, and this wasn't a huge amount of fun.
71-100 LOSS
- Game 5 vs William - Miranda / Dash
Oh no - another Dash, this time backed up by another turret. This was a much lighter dash build, but the same thing basically happened. this time I took whatever I could, and killed Miranda thanks to tractors and Vader, but once again Dash was basically impossible to catch while still getting maximum damage shots.
47-100 - LOSS
- Game 6 vs Paul - Rey / Poe
By this point I was 1-4 with four straight losses and solidly on the bottom tables - my opponent was one of only a handful of people left on no wins as a lot of people with poor scores had dropped.
Unfortunately I couldn't help - we jousted, and by rights he should have dome something, but his dice were really cold while mine were hot (only no misses until the game was already effectively over). Poe died in a single turn of fire without even needing Vader, while Rey did a couple of points of shield damage to a defender. After the s-loop she did one more, but the next turn I hit her with all my ships and got a couple of nasty crits including blinded pilot. She didn't fire again.
I feel really sorry for Paul - he was a lovely guy, and took being beaten like that with extremely good grace and remained cheerful and friendly throughout.
100-0 - WIN
- Game 7 - vs Ioan - Kath / double TLT Y-wings
This was Ioan's first tournament, and I get the feeling he is still a relatively new player - solid with the rules, ships and abilities, but still learning exactly how to fly to maximum effect. Ioan split his ships up for the approach while choosing to joust with Kath, allowing me to concentrate on her. Vader's crit stopped her from performing actions, and that let me kill her next turn. After that the Y-wings had little chance, especially against tractor beams. He did manage to kill the shuttle, and did his best to take out one defender, but it survived on one hit point when the last Y flew off the board
100-24 WIN
My overall score was 3-4, although that good a result is probably skewed by the fact that a lot of players dropped after they'd lost the first few games in favour of taking part in a day 1 Hangar Bay event. I certainly didn't do as well as the other 3-4s from Norwich - we will see how much worse once the final standings are published.
[EDIT - Hmmmm, apparently I was ranked 180 at the end of the day - 8th of the 3-4s. That's much better than I expected!]
However, I knew I was taking a far more casual list then them, and my primary goal was to simply have fun. This aim was a little dented by my mistake in game 3, and then facing two Dash lists which I dislike, but overall it was still a good experience. The alt-art Vader damage deck and crew cards are very nice though!
What WAS good about the event though were the players. Almost everyone I met was really nice and friendly - a total stranger even stepped in before the event to replace a missing card from my damage deck. I've always seen the X-wing community as one of the nicest to game with, and this was mostly in evidence here.
If you are one of those I played please reply, it would be nice to match board IDs to names and faces!
