Epic Play: Reinforce Idea for Your Consideration.

I've honestly never really liked how squishy Huge ships feel. I think I _should_ need to take bombers against them, but basic TIEs do the job just fine- and Defenders can wreck them.

Never needed to be a bomber back in the X-wing video games. Or the books, for that matter. Or RotJ, for that matter, where the Empire was fine attacking with just TIE Fighters and Interceptors and A-wings brought down the Executor . Or Rogue One, for that matter, where strafing runs from TIE Fighters do noticeable damage to a warship orders of magnitude bigger than a little corvette.

Again Depends on which Video game, Empire at War had the CR-90 and its Imperial counterpart Tarturus Cruiser as anti-fighter escort ships. Now of course it has been replaced (with Disney's blessing) by the Imperial Raider but even that doesn't act like a good anti-fighter ship. As for the A-wing we all know it took out the Executor, but it was by last ditch kamakazi run, not by laser blasts.

Thing is while huge ships have their defenses it seems to be rather ineffective with its single evade result being overtaken by upgrades designed to trump 1 evade results (TLT, crackshot, ect). As for the regenerative health it comes with a designed drawback by sacking all your energy although that has been mitigated through upgrades. That still leaves the other defensive action as almost non-existent. Granted outside of jam huge ships don't have very useful actions (I mean that coordinate action could use some love).

Not seeing that Juke ruling in the FAQ and probably a good thing as that is the straight up dumbest thing I've ever heard. One EPT pretty much negates any Huge ship's ability to protect itself against an attack by that fighter at anything other than far range.

This is why added Evades from tokens should have been given a different definition than Evades gained by rolled dice. How the heck do you change a token into an eyeball when you've never rolled any dice?

Personally I would change Reinforce around, and make it a defensive crackshot. Something like, "During the compare results step you may cancel one hit or crit for each reinforce token on the targetted section". This gets rid of the potential problems with Juke and or Crackshot, and helps a little because crits can potentially be cancelled before hits. In some ways, reducing crits makes a lot of sense for the reinforce action.

I'm honestly not sure Arvel would have been sufficient to take out the Executor. He took out the bridge, and thus the command staff. But it seems like crashing into the Death Star was the actual thing that blew up the Star Destroyer.

Also: I wonder if being pierced by a Super Star Destroyer would have been enough, on its own, to take out the Death Star?

The death star II was 160 km in diameter, compared to the 12 km of the Executor. Comparing their volumes (assuming the Executor is a sphere), the DSII was 28'808 km cubic kilometers in volume, compared to a measly 150 cubic km of a spherical Executor. Unless the Executor hit some kind of thermal exhaust port, it's a mosquito bite on the skin of a mammoth death star.

I think that TLTs are not a problem in Epic. They are a hard counter to huge ships but die quickly to other Huge ship counters such as Defender swarms. I think an Attanni Mindlink swarm will be the true Epic hotness once the Light Scyk title drops - focus+evade+reroll (with Serissu) on every. single. defense roll. All you'd need is one ship off to the side feeding actions to your ships to make it all happen.

I think you miss one quite important aspect about Epic. Golden Rule: Epic is about having fun, deploying your fleet and try new ways to play.

You totally missed the point. Epic is fun, but the biggest draw in epic are the huge Ships which can only be used in epic or the box campaign scenario have lost their fun.

As soon as you start having Epic tournaments with prize packs, it's all about winning. People have always been wanting FFG to push Epic tournaments, but I have never wanted that. If they did start pushing this, TLT's is all you would see. As soon as you start offering prizes, people get dirty. It's more about the winning.

Now, back to the OP and their idea, I think it's awesome. I like that very much. It makes sense. I don't know if they need to say it changes the whole rule about reducing damage for all weapons. I think it's more something about how the Reinforce Evade token can be used to block the one damage that is done by each TLT shot. It wouldn't change the way all Epic damage is done, but it would change just how the TLT interacts with an epic Reinforce token. It's cleaner that way, like changing just Biggs.

thank you all for your imput and ideas about the change to reinforce token. Next time I play epic i am going to try my reinforce token idea and see how the games go. Good luck to all you players who love playing epic and keep the ideas coming.
