Painted Descent update15-09-2018: Flesh Moulders

By TryFal, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I have sooo much glue-ing and painting to do for my fantasy/Descent collection, any tips for saving time and efficiency?

Also I want to make one of my dragons a 'watercolour dragon' and paint it a bit like the one FFG use on their fantasy page image https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/#/genre

Any tips for getting that oily/metallic multicolour look and slightly watery sheen? For a closer look at the image I'm drawing inspiration from: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/269078-dice-and-core-book-binder-and-best-dragon-ever/

And one more question: I have a cathedral building to paint and want to go for a high fantasy/ grand medieval-ish look, any tips for which colours might work best?

Love the green/white shade by the way- great for a forest setting too, I have several shades so can make two or three groups so might take inspiration from that for a group you might find haunting the woods!

Hi

Where did you get the model for the necromancer familiar?

It looks great, and I would like it for my own game.

Hey Watercolour Dragon,

I read two things, two opposite things. You want to save time, but on the other hand a very technical painting scheme. The best tip I can give you here is choose one of those two. Or find a balance between these two. I like the idea on what you want with your dragon, but even with multiple years of painting experience I can't think of a way to achieve this is a small amount of time. Goodluck with sorting things out, and don't start mutliple project at ones, that way nothing will get finished ;).

Cathedral colours: darkgrey, gold and red/blood. If you have a picture of the building I could give you more.

Happy painting, Greets Miel

Those are from Games Workshop Warhammer. Skeleton Warriors, got them for a bargain.

The timesaving's the fact I know there are tips for the repeated parts of jobs like undercoats- was just wondering what people have found works best, don't mind spending a lot of time getting the main paint right, for jobs like the dragon if I can figure (pun intended) out how to recreate that look I can see me spending a lot of time on it and probably a few sessions.

The first picture here and some of the interior ones fit what I'm after with the cathedral, that rather ghostly statue-like interior (I also have a few statue structures to paint so some tips for those would be helpful too) and quite dark, imposing, weathered exterior (Plus some weathering tips! I don't want much do I!)

Possibly a darker grey-black look externally to fit the darker mood and atmosphere of the story, so some sort of middle ground for the exterior, thoughts welcome!:

Got my elementals done from the base game, the master has dragonfire. The plan is to do this with all fire related miniatures. Hope you like it.

Finished Valyndra this weekend, happy with the end result! I didn't want to make an all red dragon as the images of her shows, for me that is created by all the fire around here. So I got inspired by some other people in the internet en got myself en a blue/black dragon with fire breading in her chest. Hope you guys like this idea and end result.

Cheers!

Ettins are done, Elite has a tattoo on his belly and the minion is somewhat older and has more scars.

Great job on the Ettins, and in particular the tattoos. not easy thing to do.

That being said, the fact you made the master blue and the minion red drives me crazy. It's inconsistent with the games base color convention.

Seconded, but the red's the master so it's right? I think. Edit: ah, see what you mean now, their garb, in some ways it's maybe better so your eyes don't see the base and clothing together so not sure it really has to match the base (although there's always the thing of moving the wrong one as you see red (or blue) ).

Tattoo is a stroke of genius- neat idea and seems to fit perfectly.

Other head: "No I'm not getting one to match, I don't do tattoos"

Hahah, didn’t think about that. But thats a great story to tell while playing.

Until this day they keep fighting about the current tattoo ..” ?

He even bloodied the minion instead of the Master. Easily fixed by repainting the bases though.

All of my Descent miniatures had to follow a rule while painting as I put them on clear bases:

1. Red is reserved for Masters

2. Blood effects are reserved for Masters. They are the elite of the bunch and are more "deadly".

3. Fire monsters who are mostly red will have the Masters in Green (felfire)

4. Gold trims are reserved for armor on Masters.

This way you never have any doubt which is the master on the board.

That's nice Miel!

Can I ask, how are you creating the red/yellow lava effects? I've seen this done a few times, and I still have my elementals to paint up...any help appreciated!

No problem! Here's on how I did it.

1. First you start off with a white undercoat, this is essential!

2. Then you paint a thin coat if bright yellow, I used a airbrush for this but it could easily be done with a normal brush

3. Then you apply multiple layers (where you build up the red in the paint) and apply them with the drybrush technic. Make sure you thin out your paint for a good gradient. When drybrushing, don't go as far as when almost all the paint is out of your brush, I would say 50%, or else it would take your hours of work.

4. as finishing touch apply some Agrax Earthshade on the end tips of the flame.

Hopefully this will help you with your elements, feel free to ask any questions!

Goodluck!

greets Miel

Excellent, that I can do! Thanks for taking the time to reply; sometimes it's the order of colours that throws me. For the darkest colours in and around the claws, are you just building up that drybrush technique with the reds, or switching over to a different colour altogether?

Same as with the red, there you go from red to darkbrown/black, leaving the cracks red while the outer parts will become darker. Goodluck! And post some results of you like to ??

Shadow Dragons are done,

First thought was to place a treasure pile underneath him, but this didn't fit him. So I made the base like any otherone I did so far.

Hope you like them

Zombies were challenging, mainly because of the models, ugly and hard to do.

Spiders were nice to do, wanted a black widow among them.

Hope you like them as much as I do.

I want to play with these. Very nice work!

Nice work! You have inspired me to start posting some pics of my own attempts.

Whoops on the double post. While I am here, though...can you give a step-by-step or some kind of reference material for the casting process for the ice dragon rocks? Those are amazing and there is no way I'm not going to try to copy that.

First I made a negative mold of silicone for casting. You can look up a hobbystore or website that is specialized for these kind of projects. There you can also find some sort of casting resin (transparant ofcourse) for your iceberg. I added some glow in the dark (blue) pigment to give it a ice look. But now they are more green than blue, this because I forgot the UV blocker that was needed for this kind of resin. So I'll be doing this project again, but this time with the blocker and some blue inkt (from vallejo). Will posting the new results here.

Hopefully this will get you going ^^
