Hey there all,

I've been wondering through the community of Descent and thought I would share my painted miniatures so far. I have a small history of Warhammer painting, stopped that because of the rising prices. I must say painting these miniatures is a bit different than warhammer, but I love to do it so far. The quality of some late publiced expansions are good. Need to start on the base set yet...so curious how that will look like when I'm done.

Always loved (fanatasy) board games and came across Descent two years ago. Love the game, would like the play it more, but its hard to find a playgroup. So for the moment I'm focusing on painting. And on occasions I play with a friend(s), mostly the app ^^.

i suppose the ice wyrms ll look pretty cool sitting up there.

No fair! You started with the best sculpts while the rest of us try to wow each other with the more poorly cast core set (or God help us, Nerekhall).

Very nicely done, though. I haven't seen any blood apes yet, but you make the characters shine. People have complained about the size and style of the newer sculpts, but I for one love them. Even more so now.

I'm so glad I'm not alone on the Nerekhall bit. I'm painting that expansion now, and some of those sculpts are just awful!

How did you do the ice Wyrm bases?

Love the blending on the ape arm, any tips for this?

@tomkat364 , what I said earlier: these mini's are a bit different, and on these "good" models I can practice my skills again and apply them on the "less" models ^^. And thx for the compliment!

@Kaaihn , I've inspected the mini's of my SoN but they seems to be fine. On the other hand, the flesh molders of the base game..... my god!

@Mattigar , Because you have to assamble the ice wyrm by yourself I saw my chance to do this. I made a negative mold from the iceberg and cast casting resin in it with glow in the dark pigment to give it a bluish look, I can post pictures if you want. After that I put fake snow on it : valhallan blizzard (GW). But there is a chance of plan, I cleaned on up and covering the base with rock and sand (like I did with the blood apes) but left de iceberg alone. I'm hoping to create a scenery where it looks like the iceberg is summoned out of the ground by the Ice Wyrn. If this comes out like I planned to, I'll change the other one too ^^. Only thing left is painting it now, I'll post a picture soon.

@FrogTrigger , Very easy, 3 layers of paint finished with dry-brushing. I find (but that's a personal taste) that dry-brushing is the most suitable technique for these models, so here is how I did the blend:

1. I painted the inner arm grey,

2. Grabbed the red (or any other colour you want for your model) and make it darker (make a lot of it) split the paint in two and blend one with grey used earlier. Paint the area where you want to blend it.

3. Grab the remaining darkened red and paint the rest of your model.

4. After that, highlight (by dry-brushing) the dark red and the grey areas. I dry-brushed the blend very carefully with the red for a smoother blend.

Here is a picture of the new base for the Ice Wyrm. I'm very pleased with the result and I'm planning to do the other one too. But there I'll add snow on the edge of the iceberg to give it a more powerful frozen look (that will be the master Ice Wyrm).

Would like to hear if you like it this way ^^

Edit: the black border needs a little work tho, edge is not smooth.

TryFal, amazing, great idea on the blend I am going to have to try this out myself. I love the bases as well, where did you acquire all of those materials? Sorry for the questions feel free to just answer what is convenient!

I am torn on which I like, the snow covered one gives it a real frozen tundra appeal, but the added shrubs and rocks with some snow added in gives it a mountainous feel. I think both look great.. but I am partial to the rocks I think, again with some snow effects added in.

haha feel free to ask anything (related :P). Most of the materials I got from a shop specialized in miniature terrains, modelbuilding, diorama and stuff. Here's a list I used for my bases:

1. the rocks are from Ziterdes (German company) but any miniature rock brand will do. I don't like cork, it doesn't look as natural, but that's again a personal opinion :P.

2. The sand is from Vallejo ( Black Lava-Asphalt) great stuff, this brand is specialized in diorama, have a look for yourself: Vallejo Shop

3. The grass is called miniature tufts , it looks better that flock because it's premade (the grass is actually standing up), look it up and jurge for yourself ^^. I would suggest to get a 1:87 scale version, nice small pieces of grass!

Edit: ow and a tip: study images of nature, for example don't dump random rocks anywhere, nature has laws... so play with it ^^.

So finally completed the Ice Wyrm! Still working on the minion version (struggling with color scheme). But the master is done and I'm happy with it.

Bad news is that I have to pauze the painting miniatures, need to order my priorities :(. But after the summer I hope to continue painting Descent!

MAN im speachless! WTF!!! My wife paint our boardgame miniatures, she is good painter but now, u have pushed up my expectations.
I want her to paint them like these ones!

@jopan plz don't push your wife to higher expectations , painting should be fun and rewarding for the painter him/herself. BTW if she reads this: AWESOME THAT YOU PAINT HIS MINIATURES!!!! That must be true love !

You're welcome for the information! Again, feel free to ask anything. For now the "see" part must wait, got other priorities.

And for the paint: I mainly use Games Workshop paint and Vallejo Game Color. With the Ice Wyrm I used a airbrush (new to it) for the body.
Here's a list of paints you can use for your miniatures: Games Workshop, Vallejo Game Color, P3 and Army Painter. Enough choice.

I haven't used any varnish yet, got some Testors Dullcote waiting, but I'll add this when I got more mini's ready.

I love your Ice Wyrms. An our Idea to cast the bases in resin yourself is great. May I ask which glow-in-the-dark pigment you were using? I am tempted to buy this expansion and try doing the same trick myself.

@Chaoticus I used a brandless glow in the dark. The bluish effect can also be achieved by using regular pigment. Whatever you choose, choose a bluish one. And use very little of it (small tip of a knife)! Or else you'll loose the transparantie of the resin. Good luck and post some if you have made your own.
