My first attempt at a list - bought the core a week ago

By FrogTrigger, in X-Wing Squad Lists

So I flew this list in my first game and it worked well, I was flying against another new player so that really helped. He was running a Rebel fleet with Poe, Jess and I believe Tychus on A-Wing? I think my squad was much more well designed but it was still challenging. I flew the Falcon right up the gut trying to just barrell in with those inside the arc re rolls and I did some damage heavy to a X-Wing. With Poe I banked him off to the side and then flew in behind Jess, I basically just followed her around while the Falcon traded blows with the rest of the enemy squad and eventually between Poe and the Falcon it went from a 6 ship fight to 4 fairly quickly, I think Poe was still full and the falcon only had 2 damage (crit card flipped as 2). By the end of the match the Falcon had 5 damge but was still standing and I had eliminated the enemy fleet.

Definitely still a lot to learn and I think the fact my opponent was new and running a sub optimal fleet is why this game felt so one sided, but a few more hits going his way and the Falcon would have been gone and it was a completely different dog fight. I really, really like the BB-8, push the limit and pattern analyzer combo. So many times with Poe flying last I could utilize the barrel roll into a boost with a focus then clear the stress. I rarely had to use more than a 1 maneuver to stay in the fight which let me just keep clearing stress turn after turn.

I am not sure if it is a rookie mistake to go after the falcon or not? Very low defense but very high shields/hull, however with the way I was flying Poe it would have been really hard for my opponent to keep him in his arc. And arc damage is really nice on the Falcon but I love that I can just go straight through the enemy and still get a shot off. Did that a few times when I think he expected me to bank and those free shots add up.

The most important thing is I had fun, this game is amazing. I will definitely still get my teeth kicked in at the tourney this weekend, but at least I know I can have fun just playing against myself, lol. I will still try to get at least one more game in before then though. Thanks again to everyone for the help and suggestions.

I'll be playing my first tournament soon, I'm wholly expecting to be decimated but from my experience X-Wing players are second only to Netrunner players in their sportsmanship and good humour, so I'm sure it'll be enjoyable nevertheless. Gotta get kicked in the teeth before you can walk.. or some other mangled analogy.

I think your opponent going for Rey is absolutely the right thing to do. Left to her own devices, she can tear through a list in no time. Rey in arc with Finn is a beast.

I'm glad you had fun! As long as you don't forget everything you can do, all of your abilities, you might surprise yourself. Just focus on "remembering all the stuff" and win or lose, you'll probably continue to have fun.

So I am preparing for my tournament and just trying to figure out basic strategies with this list.. I like to start with Rey on one side pointed towards the middle and Poe a bit further over and pointed towards the middle, possibly slightly to the left or right away from the MF. First turn I want to go straight in with Rey and try for a joust right off the bat with the enemy, keeping them in my arc for maximum re rolls. With Poe I plan to come around the side, either right or left, 2-3 banking then using my barrel roll/boost if necessary to try and get him in range of an enemy ship for an early range 3 shot. Will be tough to hit with it but worth a shot off the bat. Then second round I would keep maneurvering Rey in tight to keep my target ship in my arc, but taking whatever I can get. Poe would continue to close the distance and hopefully be able to get in either behind a ship OR maneuver through the debris to target the same ship as Rey in the back, possibly at a further range. For round 3 I will have to disengage OR do some stress maneurvers to keep anything in arc, but if I disengage to re set I can at least get an out of arc shot off with Rey. Then by round 4 I should be able to fire again within arc and at this point I am assuming some ships are blown up and I adjust accordingly.

Basically the overall plan is to send Rey in guns blazing, focus on keeping arc. Bring poe around for a pincer move and hopefully be able to get him either in behind a ship (and keeping range one with his extra barrel roll/boost if needed) or if they turn towards me then fly straight through them to get to the ship the Falcon has been firing on, and then disengaging to re set the same set up. The two ships will work in tandem, but will rarely be in formation or even appear to be on the same squad, just focusing on hitting the same target when possible. What do you guys think?

First, what does your final list look like? We've bounced stuff around and I'm not sure what you've landed on. My comments are assuming something very close to what I last posted.

On the battle plan, that's basically how I'd do it. You definitely want to try to catch your opponent between the two with them getting focus fire on one ship, but the opponent not getting focus fire on one of your ships. I think there are a couple things to keep in mind....

  • Running away and resetting is okay
  • Don't over-commit on keeping Reys arc on the opponent if it'll put her in a compromising position. Use that 360 arc!
  • Don't forget Pattern Analyzer allows you to clear the stress from Push the Limits on any green. I still forget this sometimes. You'll be kicking yourself if you do, because you'd be missing out on a Target Lock or Boost every since turn.
    • Not to get too far into strategy, but keep in mind that sometimes something like a 2 or 3 forward with a boost is better than something like a 3 bank, if that makes any sense
  • The Black One title can be a godsend for both Poe and Rey. They won't want to TL Poe because of it, which you can use to your advantage to pull them off Rey!
  • Keep focus fire on one target. You may find Poe at range 1 of ship A, no shot on ship B. Rey is at range 3 of ship A but range 1 of ship B. It's situational, but you'll be tempted to have Rey fire on ship B because it's a better shot. Don't do it. Burn down ship A!
  • You're going to find it hard to execute anything specific once that initial encounter happens, so be flexible.

Thanks, and ya I was basically sticking with the list you suggested on the last page. I've tested it out a bit and really like the set up. Really good tips in your reply thanks for that, I can be bad for over focusing on that arc for the re rolls, but you're right flying a ship that has 360 firing needs to be utilized. Especially if I can still get a range 1 360 shot off because of it versus trying to turn side ways to get a range 2 or 3 off in arc.
