Hangar Bay format was a blast.

By WWHSD, in X-Wing

I did a Hanger Bay event today and it was a blast. I really did enjoy the list picking at the start of the match. It was nice to bring a squad that has a couple horrible match-ups and have some control over avoiding them. The 8 person pod format that it used allowed 3 rounds to get knocked out with a minimum of delay. Getting in 3 rounds of X-Wing in 4 hours and 15 minutes was nice. I really hope this is something that FFG starts to do more of.

That was a nice and brisk pace.

5 minutes to pick your lists, 5 minutes to setup, 75 minutes to play. Because it was only 8 people and MoV wasn't tracked the pairings took almost no time and most of the time we were able to have most people paired up and moved around before the last of the four tables had finished their match.

What's even more fun is Pick Your Poison, aka Reverse Hangar Bay. In this case you choose which list your will play against. I like it more than Regular Hangar Bay.

I do see how that would be fun but it seems that the Pick Your Poision format would have less variation in what people bring. You aren't going to want either of your lists to have a bad matchup. If both of your opponent's lists are close enough to that bad match-up then you're kind of screwed. People would probably bring nothing but safe squads.

I also don't think it would be nearly as enjoyable. It's one thing to bring two lists and probably have a favorite/one that you'd prefer to play while the other one is "mostly just there" but picking your opponent's list just punish anyone who couldn't field two "good" lists for what ever reason.

At Kashyyyk? It was fun. I did poorly 1-2. But I had fun. Hope system open is near me next year. It was a super fun event.

In fact, today we had a PyP tournament. After the event, several players said they enjoyed it more than Hangar Bay. Namely because they had both of their lists used, and the actual choosing of opponent's list. I would recommend actually trying it as an event.

I'd like to try a Hanger Bay that isn't simultaneous picks, maybe lowest total points cost gets to pick last or something. Though I'm not sure that would reinforce the rock/paper/scissors feel or help with it....

Edit: PyP also sounds good to me as an alternative as well.

I like hanger bay, but it's kinda disappointing when people bring the big meta lists out in a side event, saw a load of parattani, manaroo/fenn plus palp aces, in what I would say is supposed to be a more relaxed and fun side event, yeah bring those lists for the main tournament bring something a bit different for the hanger bay

I think people don't want to bring 3 different lists just because if you happen to drop from main event.
It's easier just to bring 2 lists, one being your main event list and second list for Hangar bay. Takes less space too.

Those plastic cards are really nice, though...

I really enjoy the format as well. Except for the hassle of handling two lists all day, I'd almost be inclined to say it would be a better competitive format than just plain 100 point deathmatches, especially if it was Pick Your Poison every other round.

When i played at hoth open, i really enjoyed the brisk pace of the event. I do think pick your poison would result in much less interesting list pairings.

Agreed, the Hangar Bay format is really good. I think it'd be a perfect fit for small store tournaments or groups of friends as well if you've got space for four or even two games to play at once.

It's a great way to do it for people who WANT to play each other too. Just queue up together and get your names in the same bracket. Me and my mate played each other in each of the first rounds on Sunday at Yavin and had a blast.

Yeah, there was a head to head match up in our Hangar Bay event as well, me vs Ashley in the first round.

Never before have I seen such brutally destructive use of Cluster Mines...
