Constructive Critical Hits Welcome!

By ge0rd1eb4lls, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Hi all. First post!

I'm just starting to venture into the repainting scene. I feel like I'm improving rapidly and have had quite a few commission requests, probably due to the relatively cheap rates I'm advertising (£10 small, £15 large plus actual painting and postage requirements charged on top).

I am looking to improve so whilst I will have opportunities to practice readily available, it won't mean much without some specific points to work on. Hence the post! Please be as critical as you wish. Whilst i primarily do it because i really enjoy it, the better I get, the higher the rates!

The post shows newest first. You can see how I have developed so far, now I wish to build up again.

Very nice. A natural talent!

Only suggestion I'd have is to gloss the glass on the Mist Hunter. (Nice effect by the way.)

I will echo Force, and not just because I like agreeing with Force because it makes me look like I know what I'm talking about <_< The flat glass tends to blend into the flat hull and would benefit from a gloss coat, OR, to spend a lot more time adding gradients and reflections or jeweling to the cockpits, in which case there would be a danger of the gloss messing up the simulated reflections of your jewel.

An observation that I've ascertained about my own ships, (and from desperately combing old issues of White Dwarf and mashing my face into CMoN galleries in the hopes of absorbing some skill and talent via osmosis), if the ship is primarily a single color, (in this case the Defender, the Nashtah Pup, and the Devestator), It.... hang on -

[Allow me to offer an apologetic quantification here: I'm one of the worst painters on this forum and I sincerely apologize if this "advice" comes across as self-righteous, condescending, hypocritical, or anything else unpleasant... I swear I'm not trying to pass myself off as an authority here, I'm mentioning things to you that I myself am learning... we're in this together.... #brohug]

- okay, anyway.. for ships that feature large swaths of a single color, working up to a gradual highlight will bring the details out to the eye and make it look "finished", as opposed to "I base coated it and decided I was done!!" I'll see if I can find whatsisname's gallery of exquisitely highlighted ships...

Heretis: Sixwood's stuff (I think he's moved to another game). Bumped his thread also so I can reference it.

EDIT EDIT: Yeah, I see the highlights. I suppose I should've said a "slightly exaggerated highlight"... you get where I'm coming from.

Someone seems to have welded over many of the YT-2400's cockpit canopy panes. ;) Honestly though I really like the color selection and layout on the Outrider, (a ship I'm struggle to conceptualize myself right now).

No self righteousness or condescension detected! Haha I came here for criticism and I'd be a -insert chosen offence here- if I rejected it!

I appreciate the tip about the highlighting. The outrider was only my second venture into edge highlighting, so I hopefully should see some improvements in later projects, maybe it's time to invest in some mixing glasses haha.

Now where did the Mrs put her nail polish....

Thanks for the tip!

I'm sure you're jesting about the nail polish, but just in case... They sell clear gloss right next to the other paint pots/bottles too.

Also, I just noticed your magnets. Why so big? Is there another purpose that isn't readily apparent, like your ships do double duty as fridge magnets? That's a joke. But really though, is there a story behind them?

Your doing it right.

Personal preference. For some obscure reason known only to myself, I prefer to have a large steel bearing on the peg and a large ring magnet on the ship. I know many will find it ugly and can completely understand why! Just my own preference.

And yes, I was joking haha.
