Old Republic Era: What should I know about it?

By BronzeDog, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I've got a GM who's considering running a game in the Old Republic Era, and I'm adapting my swoop racer Tresk to fit in that time. (Possibly a distant ancestor of EotE Tresk.) I've done a bit of reading, and Lhosan Industries is by far the leading manufacturer of swoops in that era. I was thinking Tresk would be a pilot for one of their much smaller competitors, trying to make a name for themselves by beating Lhosan swoops in a racing circuit.

Any suggested reading I should do? I've watched an LP of KoTOR 1, but haven't seen as much of the other Old Republic era games.

(He's going to have us using WotC Saga Edition rules, but this is mostly a fluff post. I won't complain if anyone wants to discuss adapting the Fantasy Flight Star Wars system to handle the Old Republic.)

If the game you're going to be in is using d20 Saga, then you really ought to drop by the d20radio forums and search that board for relevant topics. There are plenty of people who still play Saga Edition, and SE has an entire supplement devoted to the KotOR era. There are also a great many Old Republic-related information sources on the Web. Google is your friend.

For the most part, you can just change names on things and have it work just fine for converting FFG to TOR. A blaster is still a blaster, a lightsaber is still a lightsaber, a ship is still a ship, etc…. Just find what you think is the closest match, change the name, and you’re done.

For TOR, it’s mostly about the setting and the stories.

Beyond that, TOR is now “Legends” according to Disney/Lucasfilm, so you can pretty much do whatever you want in that space. My biggest influences there would be the games like KOTOR and KOTOR II, but SWTOR should also be considered. With regards to the novels and comics that might be relevant to TOR, I have no idea — maybe someone else here can give you some guidance there.

The Old Republic takes place over a pretty large period.

Dark Horse's Tales of the Jedi series (the original material that covers this era) covers the Great Hyperspace War, then jumps 1000 years later to the Great Sith War.

The two games are about 50-60 years later. The KotOR comic series takes place just prior to the Mandalorian Wars mentioned in the games, so about 10 or so years before.

The Old Republic MMO takes place about 300ish years after that.

I think you can purchase all the comics in ebook format, if you're into comics. There aren't many novels.

I'd find out which era your GM is specifically using, then read up on appropriate material. You can get a lot of backstory for the MMO on swtor.com, I think. There are also a couple novel prequels you can look into.

The Knights of the Old Republic Campaign Guide is probably the best reading if your GM is using that. They might let you borrow it if you ask nicely.

Thanks for pointing me to d20 Radio. They've mostly moved to another forum, it seems, so I've registered there. And, yeah, I'm reading up on what I can find, including the supplement you mentioned.
