Multiple Calculation or Weapons Guidance on one ship?

By Wazat, in X-Wing Rules Questions

If an A-Wing has multiple copies of Calculation equipped, or an Upsilon Shuttle has multiple copies of Weapons Guidance, can they spend 2 focus tokens to do the effect twice during an attack? (assuming they have the tokens to spend) So you could convert 2 focus results to crits, or 2 blanks to hits, by spending 2 tokens. Or does the rule covering spending on separate effects require differently named cards, not just separate triggers from two separate cards?

Here's the specific FAQ text:

Focus, evade, and target lock tokens cannot be spent for their normal effect more than once during the "Modify Attack Dice" and "Modify Defense Dice" steps. For example, a ship cannot spend 2 evade tokens to add 2 evade results. However, a ship can spend more than 1 of each token on different effects, such as spending 1 focus token as the cost for Calculation and another focus token focus token for its inherent effect.

This question came up on the wiki and I wasn't sure of the answer. I know actions can't be done twice even if you have the chance twice, but spending tokens seems like it's worded differently.

A Wing Test Pilot specifically forbids you from taking two copies of the same Elite upgrade.

I would think you could use each of your two copies of Weapons Guidance once, though I'm less certain of that.

Firstly, awings can't equip 2 copies of calculation. The title requires different epts.

Secondly, it seems like you should be fine to use 2 focus tokens for 2 copies of weapons guidance per this faq statement:

Q: If a ship has more than one copy of the same card that
does not require an action to trigger its ability, can it
trigger all of those card abilities?
A: Yes. For example, when a ship equipped with two Mercenary Copilots is
attacking, it can change two [hit] results to two [crit] results.

Cool citation, bro.

Oops, I threw in Calculation as a 2nd example. My bad.

Unfortunately I'm not sure it's just down to triggering the abilities -- you can carry 2 intelligence agents and trigger them both, etc. But Weapons Guidance also requires spending tokens, and tokens have the limit I quoted above. That's what I'm worried about, and the wording is unclear.

Is it okay to spend 2 focus tokens on multiple triggers of the same named effect?

well the faq specifically calls out the normal effect, which Weapons Guidance is not.

I imagine they intended it to cover all focus uses but they didnt word it that way.

They do specify normal effect as pointed out which either is sloppy wording on their part or they don't care if you want to spend a minimum of 7 points, 3 slots, and both focus tokens to safeguard against rolling 2 blanks.

nigeltastic: Sorry, I was just asking if it's fair by the rules. It is indeed 7 points (2 WG and a recon specialist) to convert focuses and/or up to 2 blanks on a 4 or 5 dice attack, and that's a bit pricey. Whether it's worth it wasn't a rules question though, so I wasn't too worried about it. :D But I will forward that along to the guy asking on the wiki.

What ship can take two weapons guidance?

Upsilon

the upsilon can take two weapon guidance but then you would need to toss on at least 1 recon maybe even 2 for 3 focus. it would be an interesting way to get at least 2 hits out of 4 but doesn't seem very efficent

Posted in wrong thread, sorry!
