Tractor beam barrel rolled onto a rock?

By HRCBlade, in X-Wing Rules Questions

If you tractor beam an enemy ship and barrel roll them onto a rock do they have to roll for damage?

Yes.

The FAQ says this now... It was questionable before, and if you haven't read the latest FAQ it still could be questionable. But it's clear now.

Quote

"After a ship’s base or maneuver template overlaps an obstacle, and the overlap is not from executing a maneuver, it suffers an effect based on the type of obstacle:

• Asteroid: The ship rolls 1 attack die. On a ? result, it suffers one damage; on a ? result, it suffers one critical damage. While a ship is overlapping an asteroid, it cannot perform any attacks.
• Debris Cloud: The ship receives 1 stress token. Then, the ship rolls 1 attack die. On a ? result, it suffers one critical damage."

Related to this, if you tractor beam someone entirely through a small rock so that only the template goes over the rock do they still roll? Rereading that faq entry it appears so but it is not automatically intuitive.

Yes since the manuver template would cross the asteroid which triggers the damage.

The FAQ says ship's base or manoeuvre template , so it's the same as executing a manoeuvre in that respect. This was the argument initially: does the asteroid affect you because Tractor Beam is not a manoeuvre ? The answer is now undeniably yes. ANY time your ship or template overlaps an asteroid, you suffer the effects.

When Tractor Beam was first released, I automatically assumed that if you were tractored onto an obstacle, you suffered the effects of that obstacle. And it seemed that this was the designer's intent all along when the FAQ ruling came out.

In the game I played using the PS1 Quad I managed to tractor a higher pilot skill ship onto a rock and they rolled for damage and got a hit. Then when they activated later that turn they had to move through the rock again rolling for damage and this time getting a crit and also losing their action .... I like tractor beams :)

They are fun.

At one point I made tycho roll 3 times for 2 rocks. A 19/20 point gunrunner with tug array + pattern analyzer (intel agent optional) is solid value and just messes with your opponent's operations very well.

Last regio i killed shieldless Ryad with Unkar. In 2 turns. Guess how :D

If you land on a asteroid and roll a crit and still have shields don you take a face up damage card or remove a shield

Remove a shield.

You only take damage cards if the source of the damage specifically says to.
