Vassal is complicated

Am I? Or is that a myth?

I am good at vassal when information is so readily available and interpretable, rather poor on a table. I have to build meta breaking fleets to give myself an edge at regionals to even do mediocre....

I'm sure you're not that bad...

But this is actually a fair point...vassal is much more accurate than rl will ever be, which tends to reward small units and precise maneuvering.

As a Post Script to anyone who is intimidated by Vassal, I am home at work all day at the moment and my plan was to pack this time full of Vassal while I didn't have to worry about a boss peeking in on me. So far, 2 weeks off, and I haven't found a single opponent. Anyone looking for a trial match where you can slow play as much as you like while I teach you a few of the more important mechanics just shoot me a PM, as I would welcome any game at this point.

Been busy with our CC + WC, and RL matches :D

I'd love to get a RL match, but vassal is a lot easier to pause when the brand new baby needs a change :)

If my home office and my PC were in the same room, I would totally take you up on that offer.

Sadly, making room for a new little ewok has forced me to split the two into separate rooms.

They are worth it though! And don't be afraid to shoot me a message at an off hour if you get a night free and see what I'm up to.

They really are.

I will do that! I've been messing around in offline matches the past couple of nights just to get used to the controls and figure out where everything is.

I did that too, but you learn a lot more a lot faster when you get into an actual "learn as you go" game. I was lucky to have some people help me through the controls, I still play about 30% worse in Vassal than I do on a table because I still clunk through some controls and it distracts me from my actual in game decisions, but that is down from about 100% worse when I first started. It's best to just play.

Once you've played a hundred games it's actually no trouble at all...

Well I'm pretty horrible at the game anyway so a 30% in performance will hardly be noticed.

That number seems low to me. I should be ashamed really.

Yeah that's what I am saying! I have played probably 20 games on vassal, and while I am a pretty fast player in real life I started out so slow. Now that things are starting to move quick mechanically with the system it's letting me spend more time actually making the decisions rather than trying to remember how to move my ship.

Vassal has a learning curve, but for me it was important to remember the learning curve involves playing multiple games of Armada. I love Armada, on a table, on the computer, Imperials, Rebels, Win, Lose. If you love Armada, then Vassal is a great opportunity to play more games. It hasn't replaced playing on the table for me, but it's let me get more games in and play with cool people I normally wouldn't be able to play with.
