Applying Armada's CC campaign to IA Skirmish

By Tvboy, in Star Wars: Imperial Assault

Recently got to join in a Corellian Conflict campaign for Armada and I think this is totally something that could be done for skirmish in IA.

IE, players are divided into 2 teams, Rebel and Imperial (with mercs possibly being a wildcard faction playable on either team or even a 3rd team) that build 40 point lists that cannot have any unique deployment overlaps between them and there is a star map that each team can alternate assaulting different planets to try and build bases to generate resources to replenish and add figures to your squad each round. Depending on which planet your assaulting you would draw a random skirmish mission that matches that planet and play it out, meaning players would get to experience the full breadth of the incredible number of skirmish missions the game has to offer. Units that are destroyed in battle become scarred and can be unscarred for half their point cost, or risk being stricken from the list if they are killed while scarred, and unique characters lost this way are banned from the rest of the campaign permanently.

This would also be a great product for FFG to include Skirmish Upgrade fixes for old cards, although most likely this will end up being designed by the community.

An exciting aspect of this is it could be a great way to bridge the gap between campaign players and skirmish players. Thoughts?

Sounds great! I just got into Armada, and I'm looking forward to trying CC at some point in the future. It seems like a fun system.

One possible issue I see is that it feels a bit silly fighting for control of entire planets with such small skirmish teams, so thematically the scale might need to be brought way down. But I'm loving the idea!

I like how you want to add a campaign mode to this skirmish game.

I wish it already had one...

I'm guessing you have not played both game types? Otherwise you would know that campaign and skirmish are completely different game types with completely different rules. The only similarity is the dice and the minis.

I have actually. I'm guessing you are unable to notice a joke?

"completely different rules" is a stretch at best.

Sure, they use different widgets (upgrades, command cards, xp, items etc) but the rules are mostly the same at the core. Even the essence of figures on the board defeating and doing stuff is more or less the same.

That said I can easily see a "campaign" style season for skirmish, where the missions matter beyond each individual game could be very interesting.

In addition to Corellian Conflict, FFG is releasing a Legacy-style campaign expansion for Netrunner soon. As a fan of Pandemic Legacy and Netrunner it looks really cool and I think it's a great idea to add a new way to play Netrunner more casually.

If these products are successful I can certainly see them creating additional campaign-expansion products for more of their games, but it also seems unlikely that Imperial Assault would be near the top of the list because it already has a very popular campaign structure. Perhaps it would be a good fan project?

PS: Speaking of fan projects, and in a similar vein, there's this co-op fan campaign for X-Wing that seems pretty neat (though I don't play the game)
