New player ideas

By wingnut20x6, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey all!

Brand new to the game, only played a few times with a friend, and I'm going to play in a local tournament this weekend. Wondering if anyone has any advice. This is what I have access to:

Core Set, FA Core Set, Y-Wing, Falcon, HWK-290, YT-2400, K-Wing, Rebel Aces, Tie Advanced.

My favorite list so far is Han (VI, Gunner, Falcon title, Engine upgrade) and Wild Space Fringer (outrider and HLC). Also played with turrets on Rebel Operative (TLT), Prototype Pilot (prockets), Poe (VI, BB8) and Gold Squadron Pilot (TLT).

I don't have some of the really big upgrades I've seen on many lists out there (predator, autothrusters, PTL, on and on)... anyone have any major suggestions? Is there one or maybe two rebel expansions that I'm missing that would be really helpful right away for a stronger build?

Thanks for any help!

Lando in a Falcon + a YT-2400 w/ HLC would be pretty good. I do a similar thing with the Ghost. Keyan Farlander is a great pilot in the Aces kit, but works best with Advanced Sensors or PTL.

Another list did the other day is a Chewbacca with an engine upgrade + K-Wing bomber mix. My K-Wing got forced off the board in the first part of the game due to tractor beams, but Chewie wound up taking down all 3 of the remaining ships by himself.

First of all... Welcome. You own a little fleet that is OK to begin with and play with many different tactics. If you want some advices...

Go Rebel. You own good Rebel ships and this can be a expensive game if you build a two faction fleet at the same time. Keep in reserve that Tie Advanced and your 4 Ties. They will be quite handy in the future.

Proxy cards. Unless you go Tournament simply print the upgrades you do not own today. Buy the models you want and slowly you will own original upgrades. No need to buy one Starviper for ATs during the first months of your career.

Play with different people. Some will help you. Some will smash you. Allways learn.

Position and outsmarting your rival is the most exciting part of this game. Try to play with one 360 degree turreted Large ship...plus some small ones. You will learn quicker. One YT 1300 or 2400 plus A wing and B wing will teach you X Wing 101.

Good luck

WELCOME!! Remember to fly casual and focus on learning and having fun! Most people, even at a tourney, should be helpful if you point out you are new.

My best suggestion: Buy an A-wing expansion and I think you would have the cards for something like this:

Dash option (99)

Dash Rendar (57) - YT-2400

Veteran Instincts (1), Heavy Laser Cannon (7), Chewbacca (4), Outrider (5), Engine Upgrade (4)

Green Squadron Pilot (21) - A-Wing

Push The Limit (3), Chardaan Refit (-2), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Wired (1)

Green Squadron Pilot (21) - A-Wing

Push The Limit (3), Chardaan Refit (-2), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Wired (1)

PTL comes with the A-wing (I think 2)

You can use the A's to either Token Stack or maneuver like crazy. At PS three they should be decent blockers or if they stay focused on the same target push damage after Dash hits hard and makes opponent use tokens.

Just realized....... Use Gunner not Chewie, you have the card and points.

Stick with Han if that is what you have experience with. Not sure I would want a PS2 with a donut hole as sidekick. Maybe drop the title, so you still have a big gun, and no hole. The Ghost expansion has a lot of good upgrade cards for rebels.

Han Solo (46)
Lone Wolf (2)
Gunner (5)
Dash Rendar (2)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Millennium Falcon (1)

TOTAL = 60pts

you Han Gunner, but LW gives him rerolls on both offense and defense. Dash crew lets you make mistakes and still get shots off, which is nice when you are new to the game.

So, now for your wingmate.

Warden Squadron Pilot (23)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
Extra Munitions (2)
Recon Specialist (3)
Conner Net (4)
Advanced SLAM (2)

TOTAL = 40pts

Conners can help Han take out those defenders and other tokened up ships. Bombers take a little bit of practice though, so they dont become suicide bombers. Trading 1 or damage for your entire ship isnt worth it. Got to time your approaches and pick the right spots. In the meantime TLT with recon spec is very accurate

Wild Space Fringer (30)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Recon Specialist (3)

TOTAL = 40pts

Or, go with your fringer, but just use HLC from front arc with recon spec. This eliminates the donut hole. And gives you offense and defense mods.

just try this out, you have all the upgrades and it should do decently well, use Han to strip tokens with hotshot Co, and then he can push damage through with the gunner, then your 2400 can slam HLC shots in on the side should be able to burn a ship with 2 rounds of shooting, just make sure to fly them kinda offset and dont be afraid to use the 2400 as a blocker, even if they get inside the donut, you will still likely be able to shoot at another ship with him while Han hits the ship you blocked. once they drop one ship just kite around the map getting as many shots in as you can, and fly randomly, 1 because you have a turret, and 2 because you can deny them shots on you, but only do this once you are down to 1 ship, till then just make sure to get as many shots in as you can!
