Can you use strategic to remove a token off the map?

By Church14, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Specifically, if a token is near a map edge, can you use a VCX or Lambda to move it off the play area? This question came up last night. We just said for that game that the answer is no. We didn't have a hard ruling either way

if you can, then does it get removed from the game or would you just play it as existing a measurable distance outside the map?

No, only Squadrons and Ships are capable of being placed off the board.

Otherwise, Tokens are restricted to the "Play Area", and the "Play Area" is defined in the rules.

I mean, there's simply no mechanic for doing so...

.. Some people have taken that to be "Well, I can argue it then, because there's nothing stopping me!"... But don't do that.

To further clarify, as per the RRG:

Play Area

The play area is the shared space occupied by ships,
squadrons, obstacle tokens and objective tokens.

i.e. none of the above elements (let's calll them "in-game objects") can be outside the play area. If a ship or squadron (the only things that can normally move) would be placed there, it is considered destroyed and removed from the game instead. The exception handling for Rieekan, and the fact that a number of "supporting components" (e.g. round tokens, ship cards) are indicated by the RRG as being placed next to the play area, and no rules are provided for how these components interact with in-game objects, further reinforce this.

So de facto extending the play area is entirely out of the question. As regards "not possible" vs "possible, but then the token is destroyed", there is simply no solid reason to infer that the rule for ships and squadrons would also apply to objective or obstacle tokens (Navigational Hazards, Grav Shift Reroute), which cannot be destroyed.

Thanks. Works for me. I was pretty sure that I wouldn't be allowed to do it

Specifically, the idea of using strategic to remove planetary ion cannon tokens off the map had occurred to me.

And would've sucked for me in our last CC game if you were able to.
