Make the AT-ST great again

By comawhite, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Or maybe playable in skirmish for the first time? With the massive rancor being the viable center piece of a lot of merc lists, the IG-88 "fix", it would be nice to see something that makes the AT-ST and General Weiss the center piece of imperial lists. Compared to dewback riders and Terro I dont see any reason to even take them off the shelf and to the game store. :(

Both need assault (double attack). Weiss probably needs something else to give him action economy

Giving the Heroic ability to General Weiss would help with action economy and basically provide Assault. I just hope that Jedi Luke isn't setting a bad precedent for the game.

Since Jedi Luke, I've been reworking my document with the overcost deployments. I think what I'm going to add to the AT-ST & General Weiss is gaining movement points at the start of a turn. My doc already has one special action that isn't an attack but does hit for damage.

Here's my attempt to add in an AOE weaken and pushing people around.

Thumbs up for simply some added movement at beginning of turn. Especially if it was a special action that couldn't be enacted if the figure is Stunned, or that would trigger Bleed.

Terro's got a slow lizard for +3. Rancor and Beasts get Beast Tamer. Why not a special action, only available at start of turn, to gain +2 movement points? That'd be awesome.

If Terro gets +3 for a slow lizard, what do you think Speeder Bikes are going to be? Speed 8, Mobile?

It's an AT-ST shooting at small figures. It should have the ability to fire a very long range shot with some aoe. That's what happens in the movies.

historically speaking, was the At-St ever great? i've only been playing for 9-10months, I'm just asking, was itever very playable in skirmish?

No, it never saw a lot of play. They can be found here and there (one beautiful soul brought 2 of them to Worlds) but have never been a major force.

After I painted my AT-ST I decided I needed to use it in skirmish at least once.

AT-ST + The Generals Ranks
General Sorin + Advanced Comms
eImperial Officer
eJet Troopers + Targeting Computer
Zillo Technique
Rule by Fear

And here it is in action.

I think there is a pretty high chance there will be a fix for the AT-ST when they do the Endor box. It is the perfect time for it, because it should also serve some time in the campaign.

It will most likely be an Imperial Massive/Vehicle fix so that the Tank from Hoth is also fixed at the same time.

And I totally expect that the Ewoks will have an ability along the lines of 'when attacking a massive figure, ignore all defense results'. This will keep the AT ST in check and also lower the plays of Bantha and Rancor somewhat.

So, someone is certain that there is an Endor box?

The battle tank is actually a blast to use, but way underhealthed, it dies super fast.

We're not 100% sure there will be an Endor box, but it's the logical next step as they've been sort of progressing through locations in the order they appeared in the films.

Ok, I know the consensus was "the AT-ST needs more movement". But the more I thought & tested, the more I decided that what the AT-ST needs to do is attack more WITHOUT taking up its movement (like with Assault). This is what I came up with:

Quote

Skirmish Upgrade Card: Imperial Retrofitting (AT-ST and General Weiss only) Cost: 0

Increase Health +3.

Advanced Cannons: At the start of your activation, you may perform an attack without spending an action.

=> Mortar Shell: Choose a space within your line of sight and 4 or more spaces away from you. Each small figure on or adjacent to that space suffers 1 DMG.

I didn't want to make Soren & Officers completely unnecessary to Weiss and the AT-ST. Being able to attack at the start of an activation makes sticking an AT-ST out in the middle of somewhere worth the risk. A complete still AT-ST can do 2 weapon attacks and Mortar Shell to pick off any barely-surviving units.

Maybe a general vehicle buff like making them immune to stun/bleed in the next FAQ

The Tank suffers from not having enough health, and because Focused Fire needs to hit the same target twice. In many cases, the tank kills its target with the first attack, and the second action is lost.

The AT-ST needs a second attack, too. And to lose Awkward.

Tank: Lose Focused Fire, gain Rapid Fire, gain 5 Health.

AT-ST: Lose Awkward, gain Rapid Fire.

And maybe both of them should get some more Surge Abilitys. Both of them are able to roll more surges than they can use ...

If you're rolling 2+ surges regularly for AT-ST's red-red-blue, I want you rolling my dice from now on. ;)

I think you're right about Awkward, the more I think about it. Maybe I should change the Mortar Fire to be more randomized - I keep going back and forth about that - and add a surge ability to do 1 DMG to an adjacent figure.

Being able to roll more surges than they can use isn't the same as frequently doing so.

On Red Red Blue one roll can result in anything from 0-3 surges.

That said, there don't have to be enough surge abilities to account for the maximum.

And we need Ewok gliders!
