Rebel High Command: The Rancor

By theaficionado, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Great stuff as always Kenny. My experiences with the Rancor have been pretty average overall as the key difference between Jedi Luke and rancor is simply that you can't hide the rancor in any way. He's a huge target and will go down to concentrated fire quickly enough. Not to mention that there are a growing number of models with both pierce and damage as surge abilities who can cut through even double black quickly enough. I enjoy playing him but he's far from the all conquering game breaking monster people were predicting.

Thank you! :) Glad you enjoyed it.

I by no means believe him to be a game breaking monster, and he falls pretty quickly to Obi-Wan and Luke. Elite Alliance Rangers can certainly dent him a fair bit too, so I'd be very afraid of fielding him against the men and women of the Rebel Alliance. Ironically, he's probably best against other Mercenary lists, which don't boast as much pierce. Apart from the Dewback Riders, the Empire also lacks popular units with Pierce (there's the Inquisitor, but he's fallen drastically from popular competitive play).

I'll be sure to let everyone know what happens when I unleash the beast in a few weeks time!

That's certainly been my experience so far, having played the Rancor a few times against a friend's list with Jedi Luke, Obi-Wan and Elite Alliance Rangers. In one particularly rough game, he was killed before getting off a single attack thanks to a combination of Call the Vanguard and Take the Initiative, with 3 of the 3 Rangers focused.

Ouch! I can't imagine many figures would survive that barrage, to be honest. Poor Rancor. :(

Yep, most things would have gone down to that much focused fire! I hadn't Trained it, thinking I was about to unleash some serious Brutality on the Rebel scum.

I looked like this after it happened:

Double Rancor is oh so much sweeter!

Keep'em trained but full of Feeding Frenzy! They stick around. :)
