Kanan pilot ability, multiple focus use?

By Samurai33, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Since Kanans pilot ability reads "....you may spend a focus. If you do, the attacker rolls one less attack die." Now I've been playing it so far as Kanan can only do this once (spend one focus) per attack, but it struck me (since I'm not an English speaker) that the "a" vs a more definite "one" could be interpreted to mean that Kanan will reduce an attack by one die per focus spent but with no upper limit to the number spent.

Thoughts on this?

An ability can only be used once in any given circumstance in which it triggers

Quote

A card ability cannot be resolved more than once during the timing specified on the card. For example, a card with the timing of “when defending” cannot be resolved twice by the defender during a single attack.

You can use it against multiple ships, but not multiple times against 1 ship.

Once per opportunity, as quoted above.

Thanks for the clarification. Guess he would have been too good otherwise..

If it were intended to work like that, the card would have been worded something like : "...you may spend any number of focus tokens. The attacker rolls that number of red dice less."
