So having recently discovered Squadron Benchmark for X-Wing, is there anything like that for Armada? I'm not a fan of vassal or spending $20 on steams TTG
Squadron Benchmark
As far as I know, Vassal or TTS are you options for electronicized Armada right now.
What you're looking for is the VASSAL Armada module. It's free, it works, and its assiduously maintained by our very own forum regular Green Knight.

Vassal doesn't let me play against a computer.
That's what sets Benchmark apart.
There *was* someone working on it. I have a link here:
Unfortunately, the last anyone heard of anything being done was a vague promise to take a look "after October", and we've heard nothing since.
Most likely because Life wins these things... ![]()
Stupid life! errr wait a sec...![]()

No.
Tangential question:
Are there instructions for how to use everything on Vassal? I finally broke down and installed it, figuring it would be easier to use than TTS (which it is... sorta... for setup at the very least), but I'm having the hardest time figuring out how to make something like the movement tool actually work. I feel like I missed some obvious instructions somewhere...

Comatose did a great writeup on this a few months back:
... what is squadron benchmark btw? for Xwing? =)

Looked at it very cursorily the other day. Looks like a virtual tabletop with the option to play against an AI opponent.
Oh I saw this. it was a bit buggy at the time. wonder how it is now.
Sadly it was no good for competitive practice, but maybe good for learners to Xwing.

Since Ynot took it up, he bug-stomped a lot of it... But that being said, almost all of his work has been feature-addition and Bug-Stomping... So there's little advancement to the AI at this point in time, but he has stated that to be on his future plate work.

I have one tutorial on YouTube. And three on the Facebook group.

It's bewildering at first, but as someone who's just recently installed and given it a crack of the whip (setup and played one turn with another newbie who knew less than me), I can recommend giving it the time it needs to get comfortable.
Set aside a few hours to make a solo game and start working your way through the basics of setup, moving and firing.
The tips that I would give, as someone who has only just grasped it, would be:
1) Right click all the pieces to find their setup and in-game options (such as range bands and maneouver get)
2) Use the premade command stacks, rather than individual disks. These work as a unit when revealing and setting new commands, and do the masking for you so you don't give commands away whilst doing it.
3) don't bother with individual defence tokens or speed dial, just set these up on the relevant ship.
4) pay attention to the keyboard shortcuts for the commands you use the most.
5) when moving along the tool (once set), use the relevant shortcut and do each maneouver in turn, waiting until it's finished before going the next (e.G. Shift+1, Shift+2, Shift+3 to move distance 3 along the tool). And don't forget to "place" the tool first, then "notch" before moving.
6) lastly, if you have a monitor or TV to expand your display to I'd highly recommend it!
Edit: you can also get hold of the card files with the text and symbols in, if you look around.
And 7) take the time to set up a fleet and 'save' it before playing anyone (instructions are around on how to do that)
Edited by ManInTheBoxI like TTS a lot. honestly add it to your wishlist and wait for it to be $5 on every sale ever.
You can play against yourself if you really want.
It has a decently long set up time for sure but I find its a good way to get my 1-2 games a week in to just stay fresh.

You may be using the wrong advance hotkeys. I had this problem when I started using it. There are two sets one for going left and one right... makes a big difference.
