Gaming stores are what are known in financial planning as "lifestyle businesses." The point of them is to generate enough money to pay for a lifestyle of gaming, often in the owner's home town. There are many ways to make one a profitable venture and make a decent living on them. If you're interested, I can give you some pointers.

i would love some tips. i am trying to get in the position to open one. contact me at [email protected] so we dont derail the thread further thanks!

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but what does everybody think about the terrain Rob Hawkins built for the game boards? (I've actually started building some pieces already...jumping the gun? Maybe...)

It's surely a good place to talk about it but maybe shall I create a second thread for creating terrains and so on so we don't lose any good information that could be flooded amidst tons of other good things :)

Howdy Elrad...I think Iceeagle has number 1 covered pretty well...number 2, I'm still excited for the minis...I like the look of them and I'm sure we can make them look good...number 3, never a bad idea to clean the ball before throwing it in the paint...probably not necessary, but there could be some kind of oil or other junk on it. Mild soap and water...done. leave it in the paint...no need to remove it. When the bottle is empty, you can re-use it if you want...by the way, I really like this thread...Thanks Elrad!

Glad that you like this thread as much as I do and probably everyone here do. The conversations we have here are indeed both interesting and exciting because I learn a lot about everything with you guys ! :)

OK guys, I just opened a thread for terrains discussions so it would be great for all of us to move our terrain discussions (and I'm the first concerned because I began this) there and keep this for painting general discussion. Thanks to all :) By the way I'm considering making the same first post here that i began in the other thread to centralize all the useful links you gave us here.

Have fun everyone !

I bought 6.5 mm balls (thanks to you @Corto fo the link). I wanted to know : what should I do before putting the ball in the paint pot ? wash it with soap and warm water ? And also, is the ball meant to stay forever in the pot (or at least till the pot is empty) or do I have to take it off once I have shaken the pot ?

You are welcome. Washing them can't hurt but I must admit I thrown them in just as they are. Then you just leave them in the pot forever. I usually put 2 per pot as that works best for me. Have fun painting

cant make it unfortunately

This is probably ground we've covered, but...Do we think the plastic these are made of is similar to the skeletons from Mantic?

It'll be the same flexible PVC that essentially all FFG miniatures are made from.

People regard this as a bad thing, but honestly, I've come to really like them.

They paint wonderfully, taking primer and acrylic well enough that with a varnish I have to really work to try and scratch the paintjob.

FFG has also done a wonderful job increasing the detail on their figures. I don't know if you've seen their recent sculpts and releases from DOOM but they are very nicely detailed and with a little work I've had good luck re-posing and modifying them.

My problem is that I have never touched a mini from FFG . As I've said before , I suck . So the plastic will be the same as one of the lieutenant packs ? Thinking about picking up the Ardus Ix'Erebus to get a feel for it... Good idea , stupid idea , what do you think ?

Go for it. It's a cool mini, anyway.

Needs some flash cleaning and a rinse, then just prime and paint.

If anything is deformed just dip it in hot water, straighten, and dip in ice water.

enjoy your painting time and show us the result :-)

If anybody is interested, Sorastro will be covering two Runewars miniatures this month. He's got great tutorials.

I've done the whole hot water ice water trick with descent and d&d minis before. It works well as long as you cool them well.

Just got Ardus in the mail...if the minis in runewars are the same material, I will be happy...

goodf to hear

I was thinking to do this to plan my paint scheme and have an alternative pose, but it looked like almost the same pose. Is there a mini for ankuar in Descent?

Personally, I swear by Vallejo. Although, granted, I don't really have experience with any others; I'm simply totally happy with their lineup, is what I'm saying.

I had decided to finally research a plunge into painting miniatures a few years ago (when Army Painter still only offered two messy cans of glossy Quickshade).

Citadel:

  • + quality
  • - price (wouldn't be unfair to call it obscene)
  • - containers (flip-lid pots)

Privateer Press:

  • - quality (apparently no longer an issue, I believe)
  • + price
  • - containers (flip-lid pots)

Vallejo:

  • + quality
  • + price
  • + containers (dropper bottles)

Every other option suffered from being too hard to find to start with, so the choice was very clear to me and I've never regretted it for even an instant since (although I wish I would've discovered the online shop of a local-ish game store sooner - for both this and card sleeves as well as actual games themselves).

Great colors at great value in great containers plus black, white and grey primers, matt, gloss and satin varnishes and a sizable number of auxiliary products like mediums or pigments et al. for effects (including transfer sheets) and/or bases (including multiple types of water!!) - most of which I haven't used yet (not making dioramas and lacking minis that'd call for such - e.g. rust or brooks - themselves) but what I do have works great and the rest looks just as excellent.

With that being said, while Vallejo has a loyal occasional customer in me for individual miniatures and most board games etc., I'm fairly OCD when it comes to mixing and matching stuff from competing companies. For instance, I've been eyeing the new Blood Bowl core set and would like to essentially give it a very basic paint job. (Hidden puns galore! :D ) And it's quite a blessing in disguise that Games Workshop is so consistently overpriced and increasingly overdesigned; makes it far less likely I'll ever actually buy into 40K (or 30K or the still nice to look at AoS-branded remnants of WFB for T9A), no matter how much I like the metaplot recently actually moving forward for a change (both out of principle and specifically for the general directions so far). Warmahordes thankfully doesn't really interest me beyond somewhat the eponymous big guys to begin with, so no need whatsoever to spend money for Formula P3. And since I kind of consider Mantic Games and Army Painter sisters in spirit, if I ever get around to buying armies of the former's dwarves, elves, space dwarves and space elves, I'd prefer to use the latter's materials. It's not as if I were getting panic attacks or anything when this principle isn't followed, but it just feels better when it is. :P

Anyway, I sadly haven't used the paints in ages as I haven't had the budget opening for importing a handful of miniatures or buying an interesting miniatures game box in a long time. (So here's extra looking forward to this and the upcoming Batman: The Board Game.) They should still be fine, though. I hope.

I love Vallejo...their model air and game air lines are fantastic straight up in the airbrush...regular paints have great coverage and a huge range of colors. Can't wait to use them on some carrion lancers...that's right, I find an excuse to mention carrion lancers in almost every post! Anybody figure out that I really like carrion lancers? And scotch?

Which lines of Vallejo paints do you guys prefer? I only have one vallejo type for sale locally, and in limited colors, everything else I use Amazon or have to drive 45 mins to a real game store. Has anyone used army painter paint lines? I was going to order some but they only seem to like PayPal.

This is the only reason why I don't invest in Vallejo more than I do:

(Not me, but symptomatic of problems I have buying Vallejo in Calgary)
