About expanding the factions

By Visovics, in Star Wars: Armada

I know there are several treads that talk about a third faction or ships from prequels, but every time I see them, one big thing bothers me. Of course that the Republic ships would go for empire, but it wouldn't really seem correct to add Separatist ships to the rebels. And if FFG were to add two new factions to expand in timeline, it would take too long to make them as good as the previous and would slow significantly the progress of those. So if they were to add new factions/old ships into the two factions, what would you guys expect to see?

Try doing a search for the Full-Page art of the X-Wing "Predator" Upgrade Card.

You'll see a Reclusiant (Or is is Providence? I can never tell...) Class Separatist Frigate with Clear Rebel-Firebird Markings. CIS Ship. Rebel Markings.

So the "justification artwork" already exists in FFG's catalogue. So that is less of an obstacle than it feels...

And, once upon a time, in Legends/EU - the Rebels were reported to have refitted a Lucrehulk as well... But, of course, it was at great expense and difficulty - it was hardly that they were building new refits and variants, but rather using anything they could get their hands on .

I'd think at this point, there is an easier library of Rebel ships to pull from right now than Imperial. Rebels still have the Hammerhead Cruiser and the flagship from Rogue One to look forward too. Technically from the Rebels show, the there's the Imperial Carrier that they stole. Although it ended up in Rebel hands, it's probably better off to give it to the Empire since they are the regular users. Beyond those, it depends on how much EU they want to pull from and/or future Rebels content or even pulling from Resistance and First Order ships in the new trilogy.

In regards to prequel trilogy stuff, it's possible, but I think unlikely anytime soon with what still hasn't been done. X-Wing just got the ARC-170 in it's 8th wave of ships and that has been the first and only true prequel ship so far.

I thought that was already more or less confirmed? (by the FFG artwork below)

There's at least one more Imperial star destroyer design that I think would be just super to see in Armada...

Only if you lend credence to the incompetency of the Spanish.

It was put up as the error cover-page splash for Wave 5. Then after a little bit, replaced with the Pelta as we love and know.

So maybe .

It could just be a Charlie-Foxtrot for them.

Believe me, I give full credibility to the incompetence of the Spanish

(anyway, my point was only that if/when the Quasar shows up, FFG has already apparently decided it will be Imperial)

I mean, it really is only fair to give it to the Imperials. It fits the iconic Imperial aesthetic (flying grey death triangles) a bit more than the Rebel aesthetic (motley crew of misfits with some mon cal ships).

Also, a small based ship with high Squadron rating and options for dedicated fighter support? Rebels JUST got that in the Pelta. It could also be a good place to start cross-pollinating the faction specific upgrades (unless they want to keep experimental refits and fleet command exclusive to their respective factions). Use the carrier to give the imps fleet command and...I don't know about a rebel interdictor. I'm fine leaving that in Imperial hands. In the galactic civil war time period, Rebels don't really want to be pulling random ships from hyperspace. A squadron of Imperial Star destroyers dropping in be accident would end your little hit and run real fast...

Also, a little more on topic, I think you will see prequel/clone wars era ships show up. I mean, technically the Pelta, CR-90 and Victory are already clone wars/episode 3 era. You won't necessarily see them added all at once though. You will get stuff like the Venator (I hope) opposite the MC75 from rogue one rather than a forced "look at these prequel ships!" wave.

Arquitens had some Clone Wars service, too (as the ridiculously-named Arquitens-class Jedi cruiser , rather than the Arquitens-class Imperial light cruiser). Let's just say the galaxy has had a long time to get accustomed to space triangles.

If you consider Empire at War as a source of classic ship designs (and it's clear that the Armada team does), then the Empire could still pick up Tartan patrol cruisers, Broadside cruisers, and Acclamator cruisers. Plus SSDs and Quasar carriers. For the Rebels, there's Corellian gunships and Marauder corvettes, plus cool stuff like the MC40 and MC75.

Gotta be honest, if they give us the Corellian Gunship now, I'm going to be a little miffed. There are plenty of other design spaces they can explore before they give us a remodeled CR-90 with...what, different arcs and slightly tweaked dice? A title or upgrade that allows crits to add damage against fighters (like a reverse bomber keyword) would be nice though, but I think that would be better in a totally new ship. Maybe a flotilla of those little anti fighter gunships that I can't remember the name of (from RotJ and Rogue One)

Title 4 points Crits do 1 damage to fighters with the bomber keyword. Would take that idea. Or give it to a raider.

Or just errata a complete rewrite of "Point Defense Reroute":

When attacking a squadron at close range, your critical results add one damage to the total. Make it a modification, same price. Done and done. Out of the ships that it would fit on, it only really helps out the raider, and maybe the card would actually be used.

If it worked on all squadrons, it would decimate A-wings and TIE F/Is

Yeah. I just realized that when I started thinking about a Raider 1 with Kallus, ordinance experts and my upgrade idea. 56 points (60 if you slap a title on) that would pretty much carve straight through almost any fighter screen or bomber wave.

A weapons team that allows black AS dice at medium range would be cool. 5 or 6 points.

I will buy 2. TIE swarms make me happy.

I think there is *just* enough justification for a droid army 3rd faction. There seems to be plenty running around if the Rebels tv show is anything to go by.

I just don't like the Vong. But I was thinking about it & if I had to go with anything I'd probably favour the Chiss. Famous for taking imperial equipment & making it better. FFG could come up with some unique new designs.

The late expanded universe Confederation fleet (Correlia/Bothans etc) could pass for another faction maybe, but would require some creative output.

Hapes and CSA are always my go-to examples when it comes to minor factions.

I believe these are the pictures talked about earlier

Yep. I can never find it. So I'm glad its now saved for me. :)

Lol, isn't every ship just tweaked dice with different arcs?

I think he means that the model will be basically the same, and it would be the same defference as a CR90A and a CR90B

Pretty much this. Yes, there are physical differences between the ships, but at Armada scale they will be possibly even more minor than the differences between a T-65 and a T-70 in X-Wing. (Cone at the front instead of hammerhead look, three engines instead of current look, maybe more rounded body). It's different, sure, but just distinctively different enough.

It isn't something I'm necessarily completely against, but with, what, 15 total ships (including flotillas) in the game, I would like to see more variety before something that's not much more than a reskin.
