Question about Hoth- The Last Line - Spoilers

By Payens, in Imperial Assault Rules Questions

Okay so I am the IA for Hoth this is my first time doing it . We played The Last Line tonight .... I won and afterwards one of the guys says I did it wrong.

In the Deployment and Setup Instructions is Says:

" Open - Groups 2

Special Setup: The imperial player collects 3 reinforcement waves. A reinforcement wave is set of 1 or more Deployment Cards who's Combined Deployment cost is between 6 and 10. The total Deployment cost of all 3 reinforcement waves cannot exceed 24."

So when I did this I selected 2 open groups which was 1 Reg Stormtroopers and a Reg Probe Droid.

Then I made 3 waves of reinforcements:

1 - 1 Reg Stormtroopers, 1 Hired Guns,

2 - Elite SnowTroopers

3 - 1 reg Probe Droid

for a total of 23 points. I even decided to assign them to point.

However after the game they said I did it wrong and that when reinforcements happened it had to be chosen from the open groups or anything that was killed in the initial groups. That does not make sense to me so I figured I would ask the community how that is supposed to be read. Did I screw up and cheat?

This also brought up another question on some missions like Escape from Cloud City it says "Open Groups 3 No CREATURES. Add Dengar to these open groups. I read that as I pick 3 groups and then Add Dengar and they say no no it is Dengar takes one of those slots... so you get to choose 2. Which is it?

In both it seems like both answers are right just depending on how you read it.. have I cheated on most of the missions? or are they wrong?

Please help.

For the Dengar issue, it is clear that he is added in addition to the three.

* Pick 3

* then add dengar

for what it's worth I think you did the reinforcement waves correctly too.

Special Setup means you perform this at the setup of the mission. If it was supposed to be how your friends described, it would not have been written in Special Setup, but in the event rules for the event the reinforcements appear. You correctly performed the setup for the reinforcements.

And yes, Dengar gets added to the open groups, he does not take a slot. Open Groups: 3, implies you have a choice of 3. If Dengar was meant to take the place of one of those three, the rule would have specified. I may be wrong, but isn't open groups often 4? So it seems the subtraction was already taken into account - 3 + Dengar instead of 4.

The reinforcement waves are deployed from mission events. The events use the exact term "reinforcement wave", which was used to build the "reinforcement waves" during special setup. They are not part of open groups. If you would deploy from open groups by paying threat, the event would refer to optional deployment.

In some missions, yes, Dengar is added to the open groups as an additional card, and the rebels know you added him.

My disappointing play of the Last Line You did better.

No, you screwed up the reinforcements.

"A reinforcement wave is set of 1 or more Deployment Cards whose combined Deployment cost is between 6 and 10. The total Deployment cost of all 3 reinforcement waves cannot exceed 24."

You chose two waves of 10 and one wave of 3. This probably gave you slightly more threat on the board earlier than it should have. (The most you should be able to deploy soonest is 10 the first time and 8 the second, bit you would have been able to deploy 10 and 10.)

Didn't play Hoth yet so I'm not sure, why did he screw up the reinforcement wave? Where did the "10 the first time and 8 the second " come from?

Wave 1: 10pts, 2 cards

Wave 2: 10pts, 1 card

Wave 3: 3pts, 1 card

Total deployment cost of all 3 wave = 23

With a combined cost between 6 and 10. Third wave was only 3 meaning he was able to make the second wave stronger than the rules allowed by 2 points. I missed that too.
