Skill Car Question

By bkhuonker, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Ok, playing through Arkham Horrors a few times and I have a question about the Skill cards. Some cards have one icon, some have two. For cards like Manual Dexterity, it has two dexterity icons in the upper left and the card says, "Max 1 committed per skill test".

  • Does that mean I cannot add a +2 for a multiplier and instead only add a +1 to each check? But can do it twice, the dispose of card?
  • Add a + 1 to two separate checks in a single round, then dispose of card?

Just curious as to why there are two of the same icons on some cards and not others.

You get +1 to a skill for each icon on the skill card you are playing. Therefore if you play a skill card with 2 agility icons, it gives you +2 agility for the skill test it is used for.

A skill card with 2 different icons, such as willpower and fight, can be used to either give you a +1 to willpower or a +1 to your fight skill

Also the max 1 per skill check means you can only commit that 1 card, manual dexterity, to the skill check for a +2 agility. Normally you can commit multiple cards for skill checks

That text just limits the amount of copies of that card that can be committed.

Yeah, following on from Chron's comment:

When you're about to take a test, you're allowed to 'commit' any number of cards from your hand. Other investigators at your location may also throw in one card of their own to boost you. You add the relevant skill icons on those committed cards to your score for the test, before you draw a chaos token. Obviously you only want to throw cards with icons that actually boost the attribute you're testing (so chucking lots of fist icons to a brain test is useless). When committing cards, events and assets are considered blank apart from their skill icons. After the test, they get put in your discard pile, whether or not you succeed.

Skill cards are slightly different: you can only commit skill cards to tests - there's no other way of playing them. When you commit a skill card (again, following the rules for committing cards, matching the icons to the attribute that's being tested), the rest of the skill card isn't considered blank. So for a card like Fearless ( https://arkhamdb.com/find?q=fearless ), you'd commit it to a willpower test for +1 willpower, and if you pass, you'd heal a horror. For the neutral skill cards, they offer a +2 boost for your relevant attribute, and if you pass the test you get to draw a card. The drawback? You're only allowed to commit one card (one manual dexterity / guts / perception / overpower) per test.

Hope this helps.

Bit of a clarification is necessary here as I think a couple of the responses could fairly be interpreted in one of two ways. As noted by 9865434357, the restriction refers to the card (by name), not to the act of committing. You can still commit multiple cards to the test but only 1 copy of that card (Manual Dex whatever) can be committed (across all players).

Actually, the rules only allow you to commit cards with the appropriate icon.

Whoops. Noted. I suppose I've never been inclined to commit wrongly iconed cards anyway, but good clarification.
