What is the best two player (ish) hero combo.

By silverthorn, in Strategy and deck-building

Like the title suggests, does anyone have suggestions on combos for two-player (or, more accurately two-handed) games.

I believe this is the most popular fellowship at ringsdb:

http://ringsdb.com/fellowship/view/193/seastan-s-boromir-2-handed

None of my fellowships are going to be the most powerful since they all feature Dori, but of those I think this one may be the most powerful of the ones I've published:

http://ringsdb.com/fellowship/view/113

That combines a three rings deck (Elrond/Galadriel/Gandalf) with a tactics deck featuring ranged attackers (Brand/Legolas/Dori). Gandalf and Elrond/Vilya make an abusive combo, and Brand's ability to ready another character after destroying an enemy really comes in handy with those three heroes on the other side.

This fellowship hasn't lost yet playing through LOTR saga, though sometimes it has to drag things out to avoid adding Caldara to the fallen heroes:

http://ringsdb.com/fellowship/view/152

It combines a Caldara deck (Caldara/Arwen/Eowyn) with the Amarthiul/Elfhelm combo (with Dori), and ramps up very quickly. Amarthiul with Armored Destrier rocks when Elfhelm's around, and there's plenty of mounts to give to spirit heroes.

This fellowship's not likely the most powerful, but I thought it was fun to play:

http://ringsdb.com/fellowship/view/112

This combined a mono-tactics Theoden/Aragorn/Dori deck with a secrecy Sam/LoPippin/SpMerry deck dedicated to putting toys on Aragorn and Theoden to make them superstars. Add in some more recent cards (like Roheryn) and replace Dori with TaEowyn and I think it'd do very well indeed.

There are many, many combos. You can make a fellowship powerful enough to beat most quests with any six heroes. If you're looking for a one-fellowship-to-crush-any-nightmare-quest, start with Seastan's fellowship. But if you just have no idea how to get synergy out of heroes, try this -- pick out a dozen or so heroes that look interesting to you, and ask for suggestions on how to make a powerful fellowship out of six of those heroes. I'll bet you'll get plenty of suggestions.

I decided to go with the draw 12 random heroes and select 6 to play idea. I removed all the heroes who are canonically dead by the time of the Angmar Awakened cycle, the heroes (Amarthiul, Na'Asiyah and Kahliel) who start off as allies or enemies and Frodo Baggins (since I plan to use the decks for a saga run-through at some point). After all that I piled up all the remaining hero cards together and shuffled them several times before drawing them at randon (I decided in advance that if I drew Elladan or Elrohir I would search the deck for the other brother and play him as the next draw).

In the end I drew (in alphabetical order):

  1. Aragorn (Leadership).
  2. Arwen Undomiel.
  3. Beregond (Tactics).
  4. Cirdan The Shipwright.
  5. Damrod.
  6. Eowyn (Tactics).
  7. Faramir (Leadership).
  8. Galadriel.
  9. Galdor Of The Havens.
  10. Haldir of Lorien.
  11. Mablung.
  12. Prince Imrahil (Leadership).

Unlike my first attempt at this (where I drew 9 Tactics heroes, 2 Lore and 1 Leadership hero and 3 versions of Aragorn so decided to dump the result and really reshuffle the deck) there is a easy 3/3/3/3 split as far as spheres go and a pretty strong set of heroes.

My first thought was to split the spheres into Leadershp and Spirit and Lore and Tactics.

For the Leadership/Spirit deck I'm tempted to go with Aragorn, Cirdan the Shipwright and Faramir since the thought occured to me that I could potentially refresh 3 allies per turn with Cirdan and Faramir.

My choices for the Lore/Tactics deck are a bit more open but the combo of Beregond, Eowyn and Haldir is appealing (since it's a variation on a old deck I used to play).

Any suggestions would be welcome.

I like your suggestions, even though it's a bit odd for the engagement deck not to be the double-tactics deck. But there's no shortage of ranged allies to provide cross-table punch. I'd be tempted to make the leadership/spirit deck LeAragorn/Cirdan/Arwen and make it a Noldor deck.

Hello silverthorn,

sometimes me and my teammate take these two decks, they are very powerful together. Pimp up Eowyn and Beregond:

Hi silverthorn, I built these two decks to use together for two-handed solo play (or whenever I have a partner). Not only are they very potent but they are quite pleasant to play as well. One is a mono-spirit recursion deck and the other is a Palantir-combat deck.

If you are interested, I have some more fleshed-out descriptions of these two decks on Ringsdb.

THIS is the best fellowship, because it's broken. I managed to beat NM Return to Mirkwood 5 times in a row, no losses. Totally trivializes the game. Enjoy ¿?

"Best" seems an odd word to apply to a fellowship that's "broken" and "totally trivializes the game".

"best" in terms of power; capacity to beat any given quest with high success rate. idk what the topic creator is specifically looking for, though if he is looking for raw power, my fellowship is definitely a strong contender

I could be wrong but I doubt the OP is looking for a two player deck where one of the decks commits suicide so that the other can have a good chance at winning.

Not to mention it uses a combo (Wandering Took + Earendil) that Caleb said was likely going to get errata'd.

Lastly, it also happens that that combo to get 0 threat is the prefect strategy for Return to Mirkwood where most people die due to threat, so using it as the benchmark to say the deck is strong (not that I disagree) seems a little cheesy. How well does it fare against NM Shadow and Flame ( http://hallofbeorn.com/LotR/Details/Blazing-Grip-SaFN )?

haha yeah Took + Earendil Song is the definition of broken and that's what I meant earlier

I haven't tested the deck(s) against NM Shadow and Flame because I don't have it yet :( ... The shadow card you linked is definitely one of the encounter cards I think the most when I try to build decks 'to-rule-them-all'; I think the main strategy would be through Armored Destrier to avoid losing my attachments and rely more on allies, which the deck also has a lot... clearly far from bulletproof, yet the main deck also has a bunch a resources and cards in the first turn and I guess I can add more copies of Armored Destrier to improve my chances.

I really should have been more precuse when I started this thread. My problem (of sorts) is that I've tended to get into a rut as far as two-handed decks go. Most times I tend to go thematic (I've used a lot of Grey Company based combos recently) and I've been looking for new combos to try out.

So, silverthorn, if you are looking to try something that is new to you as far as two player fellowships, your approach of drawing random heroes and selecting a few could work out well.

Looking at your list, not knowing what combos you have played already, I'm thinking a Damrod, Mablung, Galdor trap deck and an Aragorn, Arwen, Galadriel questing deck would be a fun pair.

There are also plenty of fellowships on Ringsdb you could browse too, many of them are for two players. There are several ways to shake up your play experience, yet sometimes even taking a little break from the game helps me out too.
