Collision Detector clarification

By Raven19528, in X-Wing Rules Questions

For reference:

"When performing a boost, barrel roll, or decloak, your ship and maneuver template can overlap obstacles.

When rolling for obstacle damage, ignore all [kaboom] results."

So you CAN overlap obstacles. Not must.

I realize that if there is a legal place without using the Collision Detector text, I would have to take that, but I'm just wondering if I declare it, does Collision Detector mean that I have to barrel roll/boost/decloak where I initially stated because I "can" overlap obstacles?

I would assume that it works like Dash does.

FAQ, pg. 10:

"When declaring a barrel roll or boost, Dash
Rendar must choose whether or not to use his
ability before measuring if he would overlap an
obstacle."

If you choose to boost or barrel-roll without using Collision Detector and find that it is not legal, you may choose to boost or barrel-roll again choosing to use Collision Detector's effect the second time.

Agreed with this. It's quite granular though and something that won't come up often so I'd make sure your opponent is aware that you will announce when you are/aren't using Collision Detector (and then remember to do so!)

I'm going to push back on this a bit.

Dash says "...you may ignore obstacles." The effect of ignoring an obstacle is that you don't have to worry about the rule that says your ship or maneuver template cannot overlap an obstacle during a boost or barrel roll.

Collision Detector says your ship or template can overlap obstacles during a boost or barrel roll.

One gives you an optional ability that indirectly lets you ignore a rule.

The other just changes the rule.

I don't think Collision Detector is optional.

Yeah I'm with DB above.

For example, if a ship with collision detector tried to barrel roll left, and landed on a rock, I would say they HAD to do that barrel roll as they CAN complete it.

Likewise, nothing in the card text (unlike Dash) says they could 'turn off' CD. It just lets you bypass certain normal rules. There is no MAY on the card at all.

I would have to agree with the previous two. "May" is the catchall word for abilities that can be turned on and off. If CD says "can" then I would say that simply turns off the rule preventing overlaps and you would have to complete the move even if you don't like it.

Add my agreement with the last few. Collision Detector makes an obstacle-overlapping barrel roll a legal barrel roll. And if you measure for a legal barrel roll and "can" do it, you have to.

That doesn't mean you're stuck with exactly where you lay the template, of course. As with any barrel roll, you can move it anywhere along the side you declared.

Well, I guess you can't expect a whole lot from a 0 point upgrade. Needs to be -2 points to be amazing (yes, that's a blatant stab at x7).

My question about this card is the second paragraph of text .. when rolling for obstacle damage, ignore all crit results ...

Does that mean you can perform a manuever through a debris cloud and not worry about the crit, or does the card only activate for boost, barrel roll and decloak...

That works all the time not just when barrel-rolling and boosting. Debris clouds give you a stress and that's it.

That's the way I was reading it, just wanted to make sure .. thank you

You cannot compare these. They are meant to make the Defender playable. At 30 points with stats for 25 points value, 5 points was too much for a white K-Turn.

Maybe they when overboard with -2 and evade. Maybe 0 with evade would have been enough. But you can't say that Collision Detection is not overpower. 0 point to ignore crit is huge for shuttle. They already don't really care about stress, so you can bring Debris and ignore half the obstacles.
