Which Damage Deck?

By jkokura, in X-Wing

You're flying Palp Defenders. Which Damage Deck do you take and why?

Jacob

Force Awakens deck, for two reasons:

1. Everyone should run the new deck.

2. You don't want your pilot ability removed on Vessery or Ryad.

1. Is subjective.

2. This.

As it stands now, ffg has stated desk is a choice similar to obstacles. There's a weird "new deck only" group of people that have a higher standard for themselves. That said, Generic lists are pretty much the only list that still benefit from running the old deck.

I'm just personally of the opinion that the new deck evens out the experience for everybody, and the designers preferred it to be the only one that was played and were overridden by OP. That said, given that the choice exists, some lists prefer one deck over the other as it might have more dead draws than the other.

I still can't believe there is an option. You may as well be allowed weighted dice.

Damage deck selection boils down to simply this:

  • If you have a lot of high pilot skill and aces with their pilot ability You would want to take the TFA deck.
  • If you have a lot of generics and more of a swarm list with little to no secondary weapons then take the original deck.

Since you are running Palp defenders that often highly relies on pilot skill as Palp is only half of the equation. Sure if you have no secondary weapons you essentially nullify 1 pair of crits from the classic deck but since you have Ryad and Vessery you would want to keep the pilot abilities. If you take a TIE-D or put a cannon on the shuttle (or flying the new Ren Batmobile) then TFA is the way to go.

I played a tournament a couple of weeks ago against a new player who only had the old deck. First crit I landed on Rey removed her ept and pilot ability. Sooo new deck, with Kylo now ont hte table, that would happen all the time.

It really is a pretty binary choice even without Kylo Ren's condition. Do you have any important pilot abilities/epts or secondary weapons?

Yes => new deck

No => old deck

Can you imagine if FFG faq'd the Kylo Condition Card to the one issuing the card gets to use their deck? (Old deck would return in full force) but until then new deck is the easy answer

The newer deck should become the only deck that is available in either core box. There are plenty of reasons it should be used over the original DD but if you happen to be flying one of those squadrons that just laugh at and completely ignore certain face-up cards in one deck why wouldn't you use that one?
